Sticking a Pin in the Grand National |
Grand National day is historically the biggest betting day of the year, a time when otherwise risk averse humans can be spotted venturing into their nearest bookies to place a bet on the nag that their nephew said was "a good thing" for the big race.
'Risk averse' is a description of a punter who, when faced with two actions with a similar expected return (but different risks), will prefer the one with the lower risk.
Given that finding the Grand National winner is probably the most difficult task in the betting year, it makes little sense that we should turn out in our droves to hand over our hard earned dosh to a bookie.
