An emotional trainer Jamie Snowden celebrated his first winner at The Festival after Present View survived a stewards' enquiry to win the Rewards4racing Novices' Handicap Chase.

"Wow! All credit to my staff - it's a massive team effort. I have a heart monitor here and when someone jumps out of an aircraft it's 175 and I'm showing 170!" said Snowden. "He used to run away with his races over hurdles but by doing that it meant he started off over fences on a reasonable mark.

"He probably wants three miles on this better ground and Brendan (Powell) thought he was beaten after a couple of fences. But he jumped and stayed and kept going.

"Hopefully he's an improving chaser and he had to win at Kempton last time to get into today's race. Brendan has ridden him with supreme confidence and saw a stride really well."

The winner carries the colours of Sir Chips Keswick, Arsenal's chairman. "He is over in Munich (for this evening's match against Bayern Munich) and had to be there with Arsenal so was sorry he couldn't be here," added Snowden.

POWELL SURVIVES ENQUIRY TO TAKE SECOND FESTIVAL SUCCESS

Present View and jockey Brendan Powell came out on top in this novices' chase, surviving an enquiry by the stewards in the process.

Yet Powell did not escape censure, and was given a three-day ban for careless riding.

His mount went slightly left after the final fence, and the half-length runner-up Attaglance was switched off the running rail by jockey Brian Hughes seeking a clear run. However, the result remained unaltered, enabling Powell to land his second victory at The Festival, and trainer Jamie Snowden to break his duck.

The winning jockey said: "To be honest I was the first one beaten and had to coax him back into the race. He winged a couple down the far side and got back that way.

"When you pull up after a finish like that thoughts are rushing through your head, but I know he would have run on again if the other horse had got to me. Mine's still immature.

"I half thought beforehand that he wouldn't be ready for a race like this, and while I jumped off handy I was soon towards the rear. From that point I was riding for a place, but he does jump well and that helped him."

Asked about the way the first two came close on the run-in, Powell said: "It could be argued I had my stick in my right hand [his horse went left on the run-in], but there was always a horse's width for the other horse to come up and he probably didn't have quite enough to get there."

JEFFERSON RUES ATTA INTERFERENCE

Malcolm Jefferson was in a reflective mood this afternoon after his runner-up Attaglance was checked by eventual winner Present View on the run-in.

The 10/1 shot looked full of running after the last but the 8/1 winner was hanging left and drifted across the runner-up as the pair battled up the hill. The move forced Attaglance's jockey Brian Hughes to switch of the inner rail and momentum was lost at a crucial moment and left Jefferson thinking it had cost his runner the race.

"I think it's cost him," said Jefferson.

"You very rarely get it in the stewards' room though so I never for a moment thought we'd get it there. When you have to switch, you have to switch and it's cost him momentum at the wrong time.

"If we were in France, he'd get the race but we're not so he didn't. Without that move, he'd definitely have won.

"That's racing though. He's been a grand horse for us, especially at Cheltenham, and he's run another blinder. It's a hard place to come and win and it's ever harder to finish second.

"I now know it's even harder to finish second when you know you should have won the race."

Charlie Longsdon, trainer of the third-placed horse Pendra, was happy enough with the way his six-year-old had run.

"He's run an honest race but probably wasn't quite good enough off that mark," said Longsdon.
