Neptune Investment Management Novices' Hurdle - Analysis
02/02/12

The £100,000 Grade One Neptune Investment Management Novices’ Hurdle has attracted 118 entries for the two mile, five furlong contest run on the second day of The Festival, Ladies Day, Wednesday, March 14, of whom 37 are Irish-trained, and there is also one French-trained entry.

The Irish won last year’s renewal with the Mouse Morris-trained First Lieutenant and there is a strong Irish- trained contingent this year, headed by Willie Mullins who has 17 horses engaged. The Irish champion trainer’s entries are led by Boston Bob, winner of the Grade One Navan Hurdle in December, before following up in a Grade Two at Leopardstown conceding weight to all his opponents on January 29. He could be joined by stablemate and fellow Grade One winner Sous Les Cieux, Make Your Mark, who was behind Boston Bob at Leopardstown, impressive French import Terminal and Toostrong, a winner at Faiyhouse on December 3.

Noel Meade is responsible for three of the Irish entries, and his trio is headed by undefeated Monksland, who was an impressive winner of the Grade Two Slaney Novices’ Hurdle at Naas on January 8. Meade could also be represented by Corbally Ghost and Sword Of Destiny, who have both won over three miles in Grade Three contests at Cork this season.

Other notable Irish entries include Gordon Elliott’s Mount Benbulben, who was second to Boston Bob in the Navan Hurdle, Jim Culloty’s Lord Windermere, who hasn’t been seen since winning a Listed Hurdle at Punchestown in December and high-class Flat performer Galileo’s Choice.

The British-trained entries are headed by Philip Hobbs’ Fingal Bay, who has yet to be beaten in five starts under Rules, including four hurdles starts where he has won three Grade Two contests and the Grade One Challow Novices’ Hurdle at Newbury on December 31. At Newbury, he fought off Tim Vaughan’s Ballyrock, who has also received an entry along with stablemate Destroyer Deployed who finished runner-up in last season’s Weatherbys Champion Bumper.

Nicky Henderson is responsible for 16 entries, including Grade One winner Captain Conan who was successful in the Tolworth Novices’ Hurdle on his first start in Britain in January. He could be joined by Ascot Grade Two scorer Molotof, smart bumper performer Simonsig, Fourth Estate, who is unbeaten in two bumper starts and a hurdles start, and Broadback Bob, who was second to Alan King’s Batonnier on Festival Trials Day. King could also run progressive juvenile Secret Edge, who was third behind his stablemate at Cheltenham.

Paul Nicholls has entered Prospect Wells plus Taunton scorers Black Thunder and Salubrious, while Lucy Wadham could saddle impressive Ludlow winner All Annalena, who was also smart on the Flat.

Hazy Tom is the sole entrant for Charlie Longsdon, who is searching for his first Festival victory and prior to a disappointing effort at Ascot, he had won two bumpers and two hurdles in great fashion.

John Ferguson has entered three runners, including undefeated Grade Two winner Cotton Mill, who won at Warwick on January 14.

The French entrant is Guy Cherel’s Divapour, who has won both his starts at Pau in large fields by eight lengths and two lengths respectively. He also carries the colours of Mathieu Offenstadt, who owned 2010 2000 Guineas winner Makfi.

NEPTUNE INVESTMENT MANAGEMENT NOVICES’ HURDLE FACTS AND FIGURES

1. The Neptune Investment Management Novices’ Hurdle was introduced to The Festival in 1971 as the Aldsworth Hurdle. Sun Alliance, who merged with Royal Insurance in 1996, took it on in 1974, together with the Sun Alliance Chase, having previously sponsored the Foxhunter Chase. Ballymore Properties sponsored the contest between 2007 and 2009, while Neptune Investment Management backed the race for the first time in 2010.

2. The Neptune Investment Management Novices’ Hurdle, along with the Albert Bartlett Novices’ Hurdle and the RSA Chase, are acknowledged as championship races for the staying novice hurdler and chaser.

3. Only one horse has won both the Neptune Investment Management Novices’ Hurdle and the RSA Chase. The West Awake took the hurdle race in 1987 and the chase event a year later.

4. The smallest field for the Neptune Investment Management Novices' Hurdle was in 2011, when 12 runners lined up. There have been 15 runners on four occasions - 1973, 2004, 2007 and 2008 while 14 went to post in 2000 and 2009. The largest field was 29, achieved in 1979, 1984 and 1991. The current safety limit is 24.

5. The Irish-trained 1994 winner, Danoli, subject of a massive gamble, was sent off the 7/4 favourite. The shortest-priced winner was another Irish victor, Mr Kildare, at 8/11 in 1978. Favourites have been successful in 13 of the 40 runnings. The longest-priced winner was 40/1 chance Even Dawn in the second running in 1972.

6. The Irish have an excellent record in the Neptune Investment Management Novices’ Hurdle with 16 wins, including six consecutive victories from 1973-78. The latest success came from the Mouse Morris-trained First Lieutenant in 2011.

7. Having sent out the winner in 2008 and 2009, Willie Mullins became the seventh trainer to win two Neptune Investment Management Novices’ Hurdles, joining Aidan O’Brien, Martin Pipe, Oliver Sherwood, Mick O'Toole, Edward O'Grady and Nigel Twiston-Davies. Oliver Sherwood and Dessie Hughes are the two trainers to have also won the race as jockeys. Sherwood was in the saddle on Venture To Cognac in 1979, while his training wins were with The West Awake (1987) and Rebel Song (1988). Dessie Hughes was twice successful as a jockey with Davy Lad (1975) and Parkhill (1976) and sent out Hardy Eustace (2003) to victory as a trainer.

8. The fastest time for the winning horse was 4m 52.0s set by Monsignor in 2000, beating the 4m 56.2s of Regal Ambition in 1990.

9. Istabraq (1997) and Hardy Eustace (2003) both won this race en route to victory in the Stan James Champion Hurdle, while Davy Lad (1975) went on to take the Betfred Cheltenham Gold Cup.
