Lady Deauville Raring To Go in Select Stakes
09/09/08

The racing season is far from finished at Goodwood Racecourse with five meetings left to go. The picturesque track is gearing up for another double-headed fixture this weekend with 14 races taking place over two days, Saturday, September 13, and, Sunday, September 14.

The feature race of the two-day meeting is the £65,000 Group Three Select Racing UK On Sky 432 Stakes (3.45pm) on Sunday, while the highlight of day one is the £44,000 Listed Starlit Stakes (3.25pm).

Trainer Paul Blockley is hoping that his Lady Deauville can continue her run of good form to complete a hat-trick of wins by landing the first-named 10-furlong contest, for which she is among 28 entries.

Like her other two wins, Lady Deauville’s most recent successes have come at Listed level, in the EBF Upavon Fillies’ Stakes at Salisbury over this trip on August 13 and the EBF Dick Hern Fillies’ Stakes over a mile at Bath just four days later.

"Lady Deauville is almost definitely running in the Select Racing UK On Sky 432 Stakes at Goodwood this weekend. It’s going to be soft ground so she is nearly a definite runner and that will suit her," said the trainer today.

The three-year-old filly has been placed a number of times in Pattern race company, but connections are hoping that she can bag a Group Three to enhance her breeding credentials.

Blockley continued: "I’m very pleased with her. It’s a competitive race, but you expect it to be at that level. We need to win a Group Three somewhere along the line with her. She will like the ground, she is in good form and is raring to go.

"Lady Deauville handles her racing and travelling well, she’s as hard as nails - hard as they come. She’s working well and is in top form at home."

Among her potential rivals is the Luca Cumani-trained Bankable, runner-up to Raven’s Pass in the Group Two totesport.com Celebration Mile at Goodwood on August 23, and Many Volumes from the stable of Henry Cecil. That four-year-old colt has twice been successful this season, including in the Listed Gala Stakes at Sandown on July 4, and could be joined in the line-up by stablemate Tranquil Tiger, a multiple winner at Listed level.

Richard Hannon holds a strong hand with Group Three Sovereign Stakes winner Ordnance Row and Listed winner Redolent, who was second on his most recent start in a Group Three at Baden-Baden, both engaged.

Trainer Marcus Tregoning, victorious three times in the last 10 renewals of this race, could step Shabiba up in trip after her success in the Listed Iveco Atalanta Stakes at Sandown at the end of last month. She was previously third in the Group Three Oak Tree Stakes over seven furlongs at Glorious Goodwood but has yet to race beyond a mile.

Mick Channon has this race as an option for his trio of Championship Point, Halicarnassus and Sweet Lily, while Mark Johnston is double-handed with both Drumfire and recent winner Drill Sergeant entered.

The Godolphin team could be represented by With Interest, fourth to Drumfire on his first run this season after two valuable successes over 10 furlongs at Nad Al Sheba in the spring, and Meydan City.

That three-year-old, who cost $11.7 million at Keeneland as a yearling, disappointed when he was stepped up to a mile and a half in the Ladbrokes Great Voltigeur, run at Goodwood on August 23, but had previously notched up two wins over this trip.

Other notable entries include the Mike De Kock-trained Lucky Find, off the track since sixth to Curlin in the Dubai World Cup in March, along with course and distance winners Illustrious Blue, from William Knight’s stable, and the Sir Michael Stoute-trained Gulf Express.

Meanwhile, Saturday’s feature race, the Listed Starlit Stakes run over six furlongs for three-year-olds and upwards, has attracted a strong entry of 21, headed by Mark Wallace’s Group One winner Benbaun. The seven-year-old has failed to reach the winner’s enclosure since that success in the Prix de l’Abbaye de Longchamp but has been running at much higher level than most of his rivals here.

Richard Hannon also looks to have a strong hand in this six-furlong contest with Edge Closer, Galeota and Sonny Red all entered.

Other entries of note include the Jeremy Noseda-trained Strike The Deal, winner of the Group Two Richmond Stakes at Glorious Goodwood in 2007, the Peter Chapple-Hyam-trained Fat Boy and Ancien Regime from Michael Jarvis’ yard.

That card also features the £30,000 Listed Blue Bay Stardom Stakes, run over a mile for two-year-olds, in which four of the 17 entries come from Mick Channon’s stable, including Canwinn and Lahaleeb, while Hannon also has three entered here, namely Measurement, Aurorian and Sohcahtoa.

Saturday’s seven-race card kicks off at 2.20pm with the Shell House Stakes, while Sunday’s card gets underway at 2pm with the EBF Celer Et Audax Maiden Stakes.

Sunday at Goodwood is Countryside Alliance Day and racegoers will get a rare opportunity to see the hounds parade on the course between races, while some glamour is added to the day with some of the cast of Calendar Girls, currently running at the Chichester Festival Theatre, on hand to present some of the prizes to the winning connections.

Although it hasn’t been a great summer weather-wise, Clerk of the Course Seamus Buckley is hopeful of some fine weather over the Sussex Downs this weekend.

He said this morning: "Despite one of the wettest six weeks we have ever experienced during a racing season, the course has stood up well. We are all set for another exciting two days of racing with very large entries to date.

"I am describing the going as soft at the moment, although it is a bit variable and we are dolling out part of the course to eliminate the softer areas.

"The forecast is for a mixture of different weather during the week but there is some drier weather coming into the area over the weekend.

" I am very hopeful that we will have two excellent days of racing and maybe, fingers crossed, even some long awaited sunshine!"
