Captain's Blog - 5th November 2010

Join me today for all of the action from Enghien. I will be hosting a jumps card with the crazy frog Claude Charlet and will be interviewing Ruby Walsh in the early part of the show. Make sure you tune in from 12.00.

There is still a good deal of speculation about the participation of Workforce in the Breeders Cup turf tomorrow. Connections have consistently voiced their concerns over the state of the Churchill Downs turf. In essence they think it is too firm. The track superintendent and indeed the American jockeys are not in agreement and I am afraid that connections of the Derby winner should either get on with it or shut up and go home. There is more chance of hell freezing over today than of the authorities pouring a lot of water on the track and lets face it Workforce handled quick ground at Epsom perfectly well. I completely understand that connections are primarily concerned with the horse’s welfare, which is only natural, but they must have known what the conditions would be like before they set off for Kentucky. Workforce will probably win if he runs, but his connections hold all the aces in that they do not have to run if they think the track is unsuitable. My gut feeling is that they will run and he will win, after which some massive slices of humble pie will be handed out to all connected with this top class horse.

I was going to cycle to the office today but the weather is closing in and I am running out of time as well which makes the car an odds on favourite at the moment. At least if I drive I will be home at a decent time and will no have to play Russian Roulette on my bike later dodging all the rush hour traffic.

My selection yesterday was Street Power at Lingfield and I am afraid he ran like a horse who has got a problem at the moment. He travelled well to just after half way but was eased out of the heat of the battle soon after and in the end was virtually pulled up. I apologise for this and we will move on today and try and make up for that loss this afternoon.

Time for me to head to the office now.

All the best.
