Captain's Blog - 27th November 2010

4.30am and I am watching Mike Hussey and Brad Haddin take a pathetic England apart on day three of the Ashes. All the hype behind our chances down under looks very much misplaced now. I know there is a long way to go in the series, but lets face reality now for the first time in weeks and admit that we cannot win this game now and more than likely will be 1-0 down in the series with four to play. I still think we will retain the Ashes by drawing the series but for me that is the best we can hope for. The cry is ringing out around the Gabba ’same old England’ with dropped catches and a lack of heart, but that is a bit harsh given that when Mike Hussey is in full flow he is a formidable cricketer and if you want to talk about heart, desire and bottle you only have to look at him. Many people call him Mr cricket and even though he does not like that title, when he plays like he deserves all the accolades he gets. The players have just come out after tea and boy do we need a wicket and I certainly need another cup of tea!

Binocular goes in the Fighting Fifth at Newbury

Binocular

Some great racing on your favourite racing channel today. Well done to the authorities for transferring the Fighting Fifth hurdle to Newbury. I know it was a logistical nightmare for the authorities but moving it from snowy Newcastle shows the type of flexibility that is so important for the industry to go forward. Along with the Fighting fifth Newbury will play host to Denman in the Hennessey and Big Bucks in the Long distance hurdle. Add Binocular to the mix in the fighting fifth and you simply have one of the best days racing we have ever seen at this time of year.

I am not sure it is an out and out punting card however interesting it may be. Two of the three aforementioned will be short prices and are not worth getting involved in, but Denman strikes me as a reasonable bet at 4/1. I am not going to put him as a bet today but I think he will be very hard to beat. Lets face it this is what he is made for. He loves to gallop on a flat left handed track where his high gear gets many horses in trouble a long way out and what is more bullying inferior rivals whilst giving them weight is what he is all about. Many will oppose him because of the mark he is running off and thus because of the weight he is carrying, but anyone who read and truly understood the article written by James Willoughby in the Racing Post yesterday will know that those factors can and probably will be very much overplayed.

5.20am and we have just taken a wicket. Brad Haddin has gone for 136. Mr cricket just goes on and on and on though! I am heading to the Majeski stadium this afternoon to watch Reading play Leeds and at the same time hopefully avoiding the onset of hypothermia. I am not sure that sitting still and outside for 90 minutes will be good for these old bones but I rarely get a chance to see Leeds play and as Reading is only down the road it seemed like a good opportunity. Last week they managed to get a draw at Norwich and hopefully they will get something out of this game. I will not be too animated during the game though if Leeds go well because I am going with a Reading fan and will be sitting with other blue and white folk. However under lays of protective clothing I will be sporting a cheeky Leeds t – shirt that nobody will be able to see. Covert support but support nonetheless.

5.40am and Hussey is still going strong, the man is superb player. Anyhow time to bid you farewell for the weekend. Enjoy your sport whatever you are doing this weekend.
