Captain's Blog - 4th January 2011

It will be a miserable day for most today as they return to work after an extended Christmas break. It is always hard to get yourself motivated for a return to the cliff face with a belly full of chocolate and booze, but needs must I guess. Everybody will soon be in the swing of things again and for January at least the gyms and slimming clubs will be full of people with good intentions and the pubs will be quiet as folk go on a self imposed month without booze. By the middle of February everything will be back to normal though. The reassuring status quo will return when those of us with no good intentions do not have to feel guilty about a lack of exercise and standing at the bar in the local pub in solitary confinement.

My wife is another year older today and we will be celebrating by going out for a spot of dinner later. She has already opened her presents and I am not sure that she's very impressed with my carefully chosen and beautifully wrapped offerings, but when your birthday comes so close to Christmas it does present loved ones with a gift dilemma. How inconsiderate of her to be born within 10 days of the good Lord! I hope she enjoys the rest of the day and I will be paying for dinner later and she can have whatever she wants. That is either generosity or guilt on my part, the latter probably, but lets not worry about those emotions and just get on with dinner.

No joy with our selection yesterday. The Lucinda Russell trained selection ran poorly which was a disappointment and a tad painful to the pocket. I did mention yesterday that the Russell yard are in poor form at the moment and they did not secure a winner yesterday despite having ten runners at Ayr. I am a big fan of the yard and when they hit form they are always worth following but at the moment they are struggling and should be avoided for punting purposes.

Time to make my wife a birthday breakfast, I do hope she likes toast!

All the best.
