Madison Gunning for Kauto King George Scalp
05/01/11

Jumps irish racing fans are still coming to terms with the fact that this season’s Grade 1 King George VI Chase will be run in mid-January instead of its usual Boxing Day slot, but the announcement that regular big-race contender Madison Du Berlais is set to take his chance will be good news for his supporters, writes Elliot Slater.

Madison Du Berlais

A horse of undoubted ability, David Pipe’s 10-year-old has won his share of big prizes over the years, including the 2008 Hennessy Gold Cup at Newbury, the 2009 Levy Board Chase at Kempton, (where he beat the mighty Denman by a stunning 23 lengths), and he was a distant, but highly respectable runner-up to Kauto Star in last year’s ‘King George’.

This term things haven’t gone exactly to plan for the French bred gelding, who after making a pleasing return to action when second over hurdles at Exeter at the start of November got no further than the fourth when quietly fancied for a repeat victory in Newbury’s Hennessy Gold Cup three weeks later.

Pipe confirmed that, (despite the terrible weather over the last month), his charge is in good shape and all systems are ‘go’ for him to compete in the prestigious Sunbury showpiece where he’ll have another crack at his old adversary and all-time great chaser Kauto Star, bidding for a sensational fifth successive victory on the race.

Most bookmakers and those looking at irish racing tips appear not to rate Madison Du Berlais as having any obvious chance this time around, with Boylesports clearly not impressed in offering him as big as 50/1. Paddy Power, on the other hand, are more cautious and offer only 20/1.

With a decent record at the track in his three outings and his stable emerging from the cold spell in good form, there could be much worse each-way value than having a bit of the 50/1 currently available about Madison Du Berlais.
