Wetherby stages the £23,500 Grade Two totesport.com Towton Novices’ Chase (3.15pm) on totesport Irish Day, Saturday, February 5, and the three-mile, one-furlong contest has attracted 12 entries, including two of the season’s hottest novices, Wayward Prince and Wymott.

North Yorkshire trainer Malcolm Jefferson is hoping to take on that pair with his own talented charge, Cape Tribulation, a high-class hurdler who won on his chase debut at Hexham in October, before being pulled-up behind Weird Al and subsequent BetVictor Gold Cup hero Little Josh on his most recent outing at Carlisle later that month.

Jefferson revealed today: “If we get a bit of rain, Cape Tribulation will be going to Wetherby for the totesport.com Towton. I wanted to run him at Haydock the weekend before last but that was off and then he should have had a run on Monday at Ayr, but it dried up too much. They’re talking like we might get a bit of rain, so hopefully they’re right.

“He had a setback at Carlisle last time but he’s recovered and is in great form now. I’m desperate to get a run into him and he looks great. He has plenty of ability but he does like to get his toe in and he’s a better horse on heavy ground, to be honest.

“I haven’t put him in anything at Cheltenham; there’s Aintree and Ayr to look at so all being well we’ll just see how he gets on at Wetherby.”

The Donald McCain-trained Wymott could lock horns with Wayward Prince, from the Ian Williams yard, whom he defeated by a length when winning the Grade Two Albert Bartlett Novices’ Hurdle at Haydock last season.

Wayward Prince progressed thereafter to land the Grade One Sefton Novices’ Hurdle at Aintree in April and is unbeaten in two starts over fences this term. His most recent victory saw him battle to a four and a half-length success from Balthazar King in an extended three-mile contest at Cheltenham on November 13.

Wymott saw off Pearlysteps to win his initial novice chase by four lengths at Bangor in November and then defeated Shalimar Fromentro by half a length over three miles at Exeter on December 16. The form of that most recent race has worked out well with the runner-up, third-placed Adam Island and fourth-placed Definity all winning next time.

McCain could also saddle the Sir Robert Ogden-owned Chamirey, a 27-length winner of his second chase start at Towcester on January 23.

A fantastic entry for the totesport.com Towton Novices’ Chase also includes the Paul Webber-trained Cois Farraig who collected the Grade Two Berkshire Novices’ Chase at Newbury in November, but jumping errors cost him dear at Cheltenham last time behind Hell’s Bay

Hollo Ladies was a Grade One-winning novice hurdler in Ireland for Noel Meade last season and won over fences at Southwell in January for trainer Ferdy Murphy.

Howard Johnson has engaged three contenders headed by Glencree, successful by a nose on his sole chase start in a beginners’ event at Carlisle on January 13. On His Own held Nine De Sivola to win at Musselburgh last time, while Milans Man was fifth to Hollo Ladies at Southwell

Sheshali was last seen winning a Southwell beginners’ chase in November for trainer Evan Williams, while the James Ewart-trained Captain Americo was no match for the talented Grands Crus over hurdles at Haydock that same month but saw off Negus De Beaumont to win a beginners’ chase at Newcastle on January 11. The Brian Ellison-trained Film Festival completes the entries.

The totesport Towton Novices’ Chase is one of seven races at Wetherby on totesport Irish Day, with the action getting underway at 1.10pm with the Bet On Today’s totescoop6 At totesport.com Handicap Hurdle followed by the Follow Wetherby Racecourse on Facebook Novices’ Hurdle (1.40pm).

An intriguing contest is in prospect for the Bet On Live Football At totesport.com Handicap Chase (2.10pm), where the 22 entries include this season’s Galway Plate victor Finger Onthe Pulse, who could the trip over from Ireland for trainer Tom Taaffe and Sa Suffit, who was the comfortable nine-length winner of this contest in 2010. Other possible starters include the Nicky Richards-trained Noble Alan who was travelling well when falling three out in the Grade Three Vote AP Gold Cup at Cheltenham in December, Lease Lend, who scored impressively under top-weight for trainer Tim Easterby in a two-mile handicap chase at Wetherby on January 15 and Le Platino, twice a winner at Wetherby including on his latest start in November.

Also featuring on the card are the 200% Deposit Bonus At tspoker.com Handicap Hurdle (2.45pm) and the Wilmot-Smith Memorial Cup Hunters’ Chase (3.50pm), which has attracted 24 entries including Robbers Glen, successful in this race last year for owner/trainer Val Jackson and Halcon Genelardais, who enjoyed his finest hour when taking the 2006 Welsh National at Chepstow.

Bringing the action to a close is the wetherbyracing.co.uk Standard Open National Hunt Flat Race at 4.20pm.

totesport “Irish Day” will feature a number of Emerald Isle-themed attractions. These include the Ceilidh House Band and dancers who will entertain racegoers in the paddock, while the Endeavour Ceilidh Band will play outside the Paddock Guinness Bar. Racegoers seeking the “Irish Experience” can book in advance for a cost of £21.50 (£20 for groups of 10 or more) which includes Paddock Enclosure admission as well as a beef and Guinness meal, a discounted tote betting voucher, a pint of Guinness and a full-colour racecard.
