Golan Misses Cheltenham to Concentrate on Aintree Targets
16/02/11

They do say that patience is a virtue and if indeed that is so then East Sussex–based trainer Sheena West should get her due reward when her talented novice chaser Golan Way goes to Aintree in April, instead of bidding for the glittering prizes on offer at Cheltenham some three weeks earlier, writes Elliot Slater.

Even those who normally look at horse racing Ireland should note that West has had a fairly quiet time of things having saddled just four winners so far this term, so the temptation to go for glory at Cheltenham must have proved very hard to resist. After giving the situation much though, West feels that her stable star would benefit from another prep race before taking on the best around, so intends to send Golan Way to Kelso on March 5 for a decent novices’ chase where he is quite likely to get his preferred good ground.

Irish racing pundits studying this event will be aware that if all goes well up in the Borders, the seven-year-old gelding will then be aimed at either the Manifesto Novices Chase over two-and-a-half miles, or the Mildmay Novices’ Chase over three miles, a trip that West believes is likely to prove more suitable for her charge.

Golan Way has been a great servant to the West yard since being bought out of Ian Wood’s yard for 13,000 guineas in April 2008. He won his first four outings over hurdles, culminating in his highest profile success in the Grade 2 Sharp Novices Hurdle at Cheltenham in November of that year, and went on the following season to run plenty of good races in defeat, including in listed and graded company, achieving a career-high hurdles mark of 150. A winner of two of his three novice chase outings (his only defeat came when fourth to subsequent King George VI Chase runner-up Riverside Theatre), Golan Way stays well and is particular effective on a decent surface.
