Fistral Beach and Nacarat Head Market for Racing Post Chase
21/02/11

The next big race on the National Hunt calendar is the Racing Post Chase, which is run at Kempton on February 26. Among the entries is Nacarat, winner of the race in 2009 and runner-up to Razor Royale last year, while Weird Al could also bid to get back on track following his defeat in the Hennessy at Newbury in November.

Nacarat is a top-priced at 8-1 at the time of writing, while the Paul Nicholls-trained Fistral Beach, who unseated Ruby Walsh at the second fence when sent off favourite for last year's renewal of the Racing Post Chase, heads the betting at around the 6-1 mark.

Fistral Beach, who is lightly-raced for an eight-year-old, jumped with far more fluency than has often been the case when making a winning reappearance in a decent handicap at Wincanton in January. He has clearly been targeted at a repeat bid to land this valuable Grade 3 contest, but he does have a 9lb rise to contend with for his Wincanton success.

The mare Carole’s Legacy will be a strong contender if taking her chance off a mark 5lb higher compared to when runner-up to Tartak at Cheltenham in her latest start over fences, but there are some intriguing, progressive types entered, chief among them is Philip Hobbs’ duo Mostly Bob and Quinz, along with Sagalyrique, who represents Donald McCain.

That trio all boast strong claims with the prospect of further improvement to come, but the one I’d recommend supporting is Quinz, as he was impressive at Ascot in November when thumping subsequent winner Far More Serious, and he lost no caste in defeat at Cheltenham a month later when third to RSA Chase favourite Time For Rupert.

The seven-year-old is 14lb higher than for his win at Ascot, but he’s really got his act together jumping-wise and, with just a handful of starts over fences under his belt, it’s unlikely that we’ve seen the best of him yet.

Recommendation: Quinz
