Bet 365 Gold Cup Betting Preview & Tips
23/04/11

The final weekend of the jumping season and the final big race, the Bet365 Gold Cup, has attracted a healthy entry. Not easy to solve but Poker De Sivola was very much a strong fancy of mine to take the Scottish National and he was travelling well when Lady Luck and another horse conspired to end his challenge. Reportedly none the worse for that experience and there is no doubt he was well-prepared for last weekend. However, trainer Ferdy Murphy always had this entry in case of anything going wrong at Ayr and that may pay dividends. I wouldn’t be concerned about the ground or the trip, although previous experience of the Esher track would have been preferable and it is not a track that always lends itself to those who drop out. Still, on balance, I think the horse has a decent chance.

Baby Run heads the market at 6/1 as I write and this lightly-raced but prolific stayer has had an interesting campaign. After falling at the Cheltenham Festival with the race seemingly at his mercy, he went on to win the big hunter chase at Aintree and most have recent form, albeit in hunter chases, appears to put him on a very decent mark today. I wouldn’t worry about him staying this trip given the yard but there is just the concern that those earlier festival races will have taken a toll.

Speaking of those well handicapped, Maktu must have decent each-way claims. Tends to pull quite hard but stays forever regardless of that trait and although he tends to just struggle to win these better class handicaps, he is an appealing each-way option as he can race off a mark 10 lb below his peak form this year.

Of the others, Paul Nicholls and Ruby Walsh team up with Meanus Dandy who is nicely unexposed and could be the type to go very well on his return from a 7-week break. Another to consider is the mare Amigayle, trained by Suzy Smith who handles staying chasers very well. Runner-up at Cheltenham in March, this gutsy front-runner could be hard to pass if jumping fluently and although 4 lb higher than last time, she is still nicely treated on her best form.

Recommendation: Poker De Sivola
