Totesport Dante Stakes Betting Preview
12/05/11

The totesport Dante Stakes at York on Thursday is a truly mouth-watering contest with three leading fancies for next month’s Investec Derby putting their credentials for that Classic on the line.

World Domination
Indeed, Carlton House, Seville and World Domination are all to the fore in the betting for big race at Epsom, and there’s little between than trio in the market for this key trial, with Aidan O’Brien’s charge just about edging favouritism at the time of writing.

There’s no doubt that the Irish raider boasts rock-solid credentials, having finished runner-up in last season’s Racing Post Trophy at Doncaster. However, Carlton House and World Domination fall very much into the ‘could be anything’ category and I’m siding with the latter, who looked the part when making a winning debut in an 11f Newbury maiden last month.

One of the most impressive aspects of that performance was the way the son of Empire Maker quickened to grab the lead two furlongs out, and only needed to be pushed out to record a comfortable victory. Personally, I backed the colt for the Derby itself immediately after that Newbury introduction, and I’m fairly confident he will win on Thursday.

Carlton House beat Yaseer and 16 other rivals by upwards of nine lengths on his second and final start as a two-year-old at Newbury in October. He probably didn’t beat a great deal, but he could hardly have been more impressive. On the proviso that he handles the quicker ground on the Knavesmire, the Queen’s colt should give a very good account of himself.

World Domination’s trainer Henry Cecil should already have a Group 2 race in the bag by the time the horses go to post for the Dante, as Midday stands out head and shoulders above her rivals in the totesport.com Middleton Stakes.

The daughter of Oasis Dream landed three Group 1 races last season and only failed by a neck to win the Breeders’ Cup Filly & Mares’ Turf at Churchill Downs in November for the second year running. Although she has to concede 5lb to each of her seven rivals, she will prove extremely hard to beat.

Midday’s stablemate Timepiece and the Mick Channon-trained Music Show are likely to offer most resistance.

Recommendation: World Domination
