Delegator Delights Dettori as Potential Group One Sprinter
12/05/11

Second behind the legendary Sea The Stars in the 2000 Guineas in 2009, Delegator burst on to the sprinting scene at York this week with a cracking performance to win the Group Two, Duke of York Stakes over 6 furlongs.

Running for the first time over six furlongs, it would appear that trainer, Godolphin’s Saeed Bin Suroor, has found his optimum trip with the five year old now looking to be a major player in the big Group One sprints later this season. He has already been quoted at 10/1 to win the Group One Golden Jubilee Stakes next month at Royal Ascot where should he be successful another trip over to the Breeders Cup in America in November is likely, this time to take on the Turf Sprint, will be very much on the cards.

Jockey Frankie Dettori was delighted with him, particularly when he made his move a furlong and a half out. He moved to the front with an imperious look about him where it looked obvious to all that he still had plenty left in the tank. In behind in second place with odds of 13/2 came the Dandy Nicholls trained Regal Parade, himself a past Group One winner, while outsider Tiddlywinks ran a terrific race for the each way backers, finishing third with odds of 40/1.

Formerly with the Brian Meehan yard, Delegator, was thought to have had the potential to be one of the great milers, but after going off as the 3/1 favourite in the 2000 Guineas in 2009, he found Sea The Stars far too good for him and had to settle for second place a length and half back. Defeats then followed in the Irish 2000 Guineas and the Group One, St James Palace Stakes at Royal Ascot. His luck did not change either when he made his move to Godolphin, winning only once until yesterday in six starts. He has taken on the almost unbeatable, Goldikova in the last two Breeders Cup Mile’ in the States, but was beaten comfortably on both occasions; in fact last year he could only manage eighth place behind the French wonder filly.

On this performance he is certainly one to watch this season, his next race as mentioned above is the Golden Jubilee which will almost certainly be followed by the July Cup at Newmarket, with the Breeders Cup being potentially his major target for the year.
