Canford Cliffs Solid for the Lockinge Stakes
13/05/11

Saturday's feature race is the Group 1 Lockinge Stakes at Newbury and Richard Hannon provides about 75% of the book courtesy of Dick Turpin and Canford Cliffs.

Dick Turpin
Much has been made of the fact that both these top class colts are trained by the same yard and Dick Turpin has perhaps been considered the lesser talented of the two; an abortive attempt to switch him over to 10f last season testament to that. However, the score is 2-1 in Dick Turpin’s favour and so he should not be underestimated, particularly as he has a run under his belt. On the figures, his defeat of Cityscape in the Bet365 mile was not great but he travelled and quickened nicely and a horse can do no more than win.

Canford Cliffs
I have to favour Canford Cliffs though on balance. Thought of notably highly by the Hannon team, this colt mopped up three Group 1 races in a selective campaign last season and has reportedly done well in every respect over the winter. A couple of racecourse gallops have been completed in preparation for this and although he is likely to start odds-on, he looks a decent bet regardless.

For each-way backers, then Red Jazz has Group 1 form and could grab a place although it does seem that 7f is really his trip. Also interesting is the Godolphin runner, Shakespearean, who may just be fired up in a first time visor and tongue-tie combination.

Recommendation: Canford Cliffs
