Captain's Blog - 14th May 2011

I had a look at the Dante yesterday and discovered that Carlton House posted a speed figure of 50!! Yes you read that correctly. It was a farce of a race which the Americans would call a chuck out race. In other words in terms of form study and future performances it is completely meaningless. Last year Cape Blanco won the race and posted a figure of 121 with Workforce in second posting a 116, now that was a race that actually told us something about the future, this years Dante has told us nothing I am afraid and thus the current price of 7/4 about Carlton House is way too short. Of course he could win the Derby but nothing he did in the Dante points to that.

For the second day in a row our each way selection here on the blog finished a narrowly beaten second. No financial damage done I guess, but frustrating nonetheless. There is plenty of good racing to go at today and hopefully we will all come out of today on top. The Lockinge is the feature event on today and I will be previewing it on Mark Your Card later with Dave Nevison. Here are the magic speed figs relating to this years excellent renewal.

Balthazaar’s Gift 116
Beacon Lodge 113
Canford Cliffs 120
Cityscape 114
Dick Turpin 118
Premio Loco 114
Red Jazz 117
Shakespearean 104
Twice Over 116
Worthaad 105

What a set of figures those are and we are in for a real treat this afternoon. I suspect it will be another good day for the Hannon team. They have the two top figure horses in Canford Cliffs and Dick Turpin. Dick Turpin may just have the edge on his stablemate this time as he has had the benefit of a run already and has already gained a verdict at this track over Canford Cliffs in last year's Greenham. I expect them both to dominate the race and a Hannon exacta is not out of the question.

I am heading to the office later this morning to present Mark Your Card. I am not staying to work in the booth during the afternoon as that is the preserve of Nial Hannity today. Instead I will be looking after my daughter at home and hoping that she is happy to sit down and watch the FA Cup. Incidentally, surley Stoke are the value to turn over the overpaid Blue Moon mob? If Man City get off to a flyer they will win but if the game is close and becomes attritional they will be beaten as Stoke are a side with a good deal more fight and resolve and are also underestimated in terms of their raw ability.

Time for me to get to the office. Enjoy a great day of sport.

All the best
