Dubawi Gold Heads 11 for Irish 2000 Guineas
18/05/11

Saturday’s Abu Dhabi Irish 2,000 Guineas has lost some of its lustre though the absence of Dream Ahead and Pathfork at the five-day declaration stage, while of the current 11 entries a maximum of 10 will go to post, as Zoffany, one of a quintet of Aidan O-Brien-trained horses entered, has been ruled out with colic.

Nevertheless, it has the making of an intriguing contest and Dubawi Gold, who got closer to Frankel than anything else in the English equivalent at the end of last month, finishing six lengths second to that brilliant colt, is favourite to go one better in the colts’ Classic at The Curragh this weekend.

At around the 13-8 mark, however, I am inclined to look elsewhere. Whilst that form on the Rowley Mile is the best on offer – and he holds Slim Shadey and Roderic O’Connor on that evidence – whether or not he will back that effort up remains to be seen.

Clearly, the son of Dubawi improved during the winter and presumably benefited from the switch to the Richard Hannon stable from Michael Dods’ camp, but the two Listed races he won narrowly on the AW at Lingfield in his two starts this season prior to his heroic Guineas effort haven’t worked out well at all.

It’s often the case that a horse runs well above itself, with all due respect, in a Classic and then fails to reproduce the form. Dubawi Gold may well prove me totally wrong on this occasion, but I wouldn’t be so sure that he will confirm the placings with Roderic O’Connor, who was clearly not himself at Newmarket on April 30.

However, it’s one of the latter’s stablemates that interests me, Indeed, at around the 12-1 mark Master Of Hounds rates a solid each-way bet, as his form entitles him to be half that price.

The Kingmambo colt was just touched off by Dunboyne Express, who is currently priced up in the region of 11-4 for Saturday’s race, at Leopardstown last season, and has proven that he has trained on with solid efforts in defeat in Dubai and the US already in 2011.

In both of his races this season Master Of Hounds has been tried over 10 furlongs, and if either, or both, of O’Brien’s other contenders, High Ruler and Oracle, act as a pacemaker, and go haring off in front, this race could be teed up nicely for the selection, whose stamina could come into play.

Dunboyne Express did the job nicely on his reappearance at Leopardstown and is an obvious danger, while Zabarajad was just touched off when return to action over 7f at this track in a Listed heat won by Imperial Rome earlier this month. He’s still a maiden, but has plenty of potential and will relish the extra furlong of Saturday’s race, so is not dismissed lightly.

Recommendation: Master Of Hounds (each-way)
