Aidan O’Brien’s Together Favourite for Irish 1000 Guineas
20/05/11

Together heads the betting for Sunday’s Etihad Airways Irish 1,000 Guineas at the time of writing, and the Galileo filly is a worthy favourite, having been beaten less than a length by Blue Bunting in the English equivalent at Newmarket at the beginning of the month.

However, while there is no doubt that she’s a smart performer, she lacks the scope for improvement that some of these possess, particularly the John Oxx-trained EMIYNA, who rates a good bet at around the 9-1 mark for this fillies’ Classic at The Curragh.

The daughter of Maria’s Son shaped well when fifth at Leopardstown on her sole start as a two-year-old and showed that she has improved when making a winning reappearance in a maiden on Polytrack at Dundalk in April. Subsequently, she justified market support when landing a Group 3 over 7f at this track, displaying a good turn of foot and battling well close home to narrowly see off Lolly For Dolly.

It’s always a good sign when an inexperienced three-year-old filly is able to beat an older horse earlier in the season, and the dual Group 3-winning Lolly For Dolly is a very useful sort. Indeed, that represented another step forward for Emiyna and there’s every reason to suspect that she’s capable of better still, and there are strong stamina influences in her pedigree, so a strongly-run mile round here ought to be right up her street.

Laughing Lashes was clearly way below her best in the 1,000 Guineas at Newmarket and is certainly not one to write off, since her juvenile form was strong. However, another also-ran at Newmarket, Misty For Me, is readily passed over. Although she was a dual Group 1 winner last season, she looked very furnished as a two-year-old and I suspected she may not be the type to train on.

Interesting, three of Aidan O’Brien’s quintet of entries, including Together and Misty For Me, are ahead of Wild Wind in the betting, but I rate the last-named the Ballydoyle handler’s best chance in the race, and the 12-1 currently available is pretty appealing. She posted a solid effort when third in last weekend’s French 1,000 Guineas and, on the proviso that that effort hasn’t taken too much out of her, she should be in the money on Sunday.

Banimpire has already had a busy 2011 campaign, with four runs under her belt, but Jim Bolger’s charge is thriving, winning her last three over various trips. The fact that she stays further than a mile augurs well in a race that is certain to be run at a strong pace, so she’s another that has to be high on any shortlist.

Recommendation: Emiyna
