Carlton House Connections Eye Tilt at Irish Derby
21/06/11

The debate as to whether Carlton House would have won the Investec Derby at Epsom earlier this month had he not lost a shoe during the race could rage on forever. No-one will ever be able to say for sure, but The Queen’s colt has been installed as clear favourite to gain compensation in the Irish equivalent at The Curragh on Sunday, the Dubai Duty Free Irish Derby.

The son of Street Cry, who will be The Queen’s first runner in the Irish Classic should he take his chance, reportedly delighted connections during a recent workout. He will not be able to fully set the record straight on Sunday, as Epsom hero Pour Moi will not be in attendance, but if he wins decisively it would fuel the fire burning within those that felt he was an unlucky loser on June 4.

Indeed, Epsom runner-up Treasure Beach is a certain runner at The Curragh and, given that he was less than a length ahead of third-placed Carlton House on that occasion, a clear-cut victory for Sir Michael Stoute’s charge in Ireland would add credibility to the notion of many that felt he would have won England’s premier Flat race had all four shoes remained intact.

However, I personally believe that Treasure Beach will confirm the placings and provide Aidan O’Brien with his sixth consecutive winner in this prestigious contest. I was impressed with the son of Galileo when he landed the Chester Vase on his reappearance last month, and that form was given a timely boost when the runner-up that day, Nathaniel, bolted up at Royal Ascot recently.

What impressed me about Treasure Beach’s performance on the Roodee was the way he quickened, and then stayed on in game fashion when Nathaniel threw down his challenge. On the face of it, that form looks stronger than that of Carlton House’s victory in the Dante at York in May, and the selection's subsequent effort at Epsom suggests that he’s still improving. Consequently, I’d rather back Treasure Beach at 7-2 than Carlton House at 6-4.

O’Brien is also set to field Memphis Tennessee, Recital and Seville, fourth, sixth and tenth respectively in the English Derby, in this weekend’s big race, while Ed Dunlop may allow Investec Derby fifth Native Khan to take his chance. Of that quartet I view Recital as the most dangerous, but I see no reason why any of them should turn the tables on Treasure Beach.
