Classic Rematch on the Cards in Dubai Duty Free Irish Derby
22/06/11

A total of nine horses have stood their ground at yesterday’s entry stage for the Dubai Duty Free Irish Derby at the Curragh this Sunday and what a race our premier Group One Classic promises to be with Treasure Beach, Carlton House, Memphis Tennessee, Native Khan and Seville all set to do battle once again following their exploits in the Epsom Derby at the beginning of the month.

Treasure Beach, hoping to give trainer Aidan O’Brien a sixth successive victory in the race, fared best of the quintet when going under by a head to the French-trained winner, but he only had three quarters of a length and the same to spare over Carlton House (third) and Memphis Tennessee with Native Khan close up in fifth and Seville further back in tenth spot. There is little doubt that Treasure Beach and Memphis Tennessee both got the run of the race that afternoon and neither horse is sure to confirm placings with either Carlton House or Native Khan.

Carlton House, installed at 5/4 favourite by Paddy Power, was forced to race wide all the way up the straight and was further inconvenienced when losing a shoe inside the final furlong as he threw down his challenge. He will be better suited to the demands of the Curragh. That remark also applies to Native Khan who will relish every yard of Sunday’s trip judged on his staying on performance at Epsom.

Aidan O’Brien is seeking his ninth win in the race and his sixth in succession. He holds a strong hand with four of the nine horses remaining in the race. Along with Treasure Beach, Memphis Tennessee and Seville, the Ballydoyle-based trainer has also left Roderic O’Connor in the race. The latter never got in a blow when finishing eighth behind Reliable Man in the Prix Du Jockey Club at Chantilly last time, but the son of Galileo earlier showed his class when making all to land the Abu Dhabi Irish 2,000 Guineas at this venue in May. Stamina should not be an issue for him and he deserves plenty of respect.

Notable Graduate has always been held in high regard by his trainer Dermot Weld and should run a big race, while Dunboyne Express can be given a shout if returning to his best. Best Halo, meanwhile, will give trainer Paul Deegan his first runner in the race.

Aidan O’Brien has a strong hand in the Group Two Dubai Duty Free Railway Stakes with four of the 10 entries, while Factory Time (Mick Channon) and the speedy Lilbourne Lad (Richard Hannon) are the two overseas challengers.

There are 15 entries for the Group Three Woodies D.I.Y. Sapphire Stakes, including a nine strong British challenge. The Listed Dubai Duty Free Celebration Stakes, meanwhile, has also attracted 15 entries. The ultra competitive Paddy Power Sprint has attracted 39 entries including eight trained in Britain

The Dubai Duty Free Irish Derby Festival starts this Friday and will feature the Good Food Ireland Village which will be open throughout the weekend. Saturday and Sunday will both be major fashion days, with spectacular prizes for the Whitewater Shopping Centre sponsored Best Accessorised Outfit and Most Perfect Legs and Best Manicured Nails supported by Sally Hansen on Saturday, while the Most Stylish Lady on Sunday will win a 5 star holiday to Dubai courtesy of Dubai Duty Free.

Tickets for all three days of the Dubai Duty Free Irish Derby Festival are available from www.curragh.ie or by calling 045 441205. There is plenty of free car parking, while trains to Kildare Town are met by a free shuttle bus to the racecourse.
