Workforce Can Eclipse So You Think in Sandown Spectacular
30/06/11

On Saturday evening there is a heavyweight clash between David Haye and Wladimir Kiltschko in a boxing ring in Hamburg, and earlier in the day an equine heavyweight clash takes place at Sandown where So You Think and Workforce square up in the Coral-Eclipse.

If the betting for this prestigious Group One event is to prove significant, So You Think is the one that will have the knockout blow – Aidan O’Brien’s charge is now as short as 8-11 for the 1¼m contest – and one of the sponsors’ customer’s in particular will be hoping that’s the case, having placed a wager of £40,000 on the former Aussie superstar!

There is no doubt that So You Think is one heck of a specimen. O’Brien blamed himself after the colt was surprisingly turned over by Godolphin’s Rewilding in the Prince Of Wales’s Stakes at Royal Ascot on June 15. I’m not a great believer in backing against an odds-on shot in a race when I genuinely believe the horse will win, but in this instance I’m too tempted by price currently available about Workforce.

Indeed, 2-1 is too generous about last year’s Epsom Derby and Arc hero. Many will point to the fact that So You Think boasts the superior form over the trip. However, Sandown is a pretty stiff track and Sir Michael Stoute is likely to ensure that this turns into a proper test by fielding Confront as a pacemaker.

So You Think was mightily impressive in his first two starts since switching from the Southern Hemisphere to Ballydoyle, but in winning the races in question he didn’t really achieve a great deal in terms of collateral form. I’m not suggesting that he’s not a high-class performer, as he ostensibly is, but Workforce’s turn of foot sways me.

The son of King’s Best looked in need of the run when landing the Group Three Brigadier Gerard Stakes over the Eclipse C&D in May, yet he still managed to concede 7lb and ultimately beat Poet but a decisive length, with a yawning gap back to the third home, Jan Vermeer.

Last season Workforce came on a bundle for his seasonal reappearance; on return in 2010 he was runner-up in the Dante, but a month later he produced a mesmerising display in the Derby, running out a seven-length winner of Flat racing’s Blue Riband event. With just six runs under his belt, there could be more to come from the four-year-old.

When the starter raises his flag at around 3.10 on Saturday it’ll be, metaphorically speaking, akin to the yell of ‘let’s get ready to rumble’ ahead of a marquee boxing match. On Saturday afternoon there’s only one corner I want to be in – and that’s Workforce’s corner!
