The Rectifier Aims for Glory in totesport Mile
07/07/11

Weights for the totesport Mile (3.10pm) are revealed and one trainer hoping to land the lucrative heritage handicap at Glorious Goodwood on Friday, July 29, is Jim Boyle, whose stable star The Rectifier (16/1 with sponsor totesport ) has been allotted 9st 6lb.

The £125,000 contest is the prime summer target for the four-year-old who was runner-up over the course and distance in the Listed West Sussex County Times On The House Stakes on May 30.

Since then, The Rectifier, who joined Boyle from Stef Higgins’ yard ahead of this season, failed by a nose to win back-to-back renewals of the Listed Midsummer Stakes at Windsor on June 25.

Boyle, who trains at Epsom, revealed today: “The plan for The Rectifier is the totesport Mile. He has been running well all season and has progressed nicely through the year; he has improved for each run, which is always nice to see.

“He was unlucky in a Listed race at Windsor last time and he has pleased us with the way he has performed in his races this season, so we thought we would have a crack at a big one.

“The owner (Anne Cowley) likes Goodwood and the horse has form there. He perhaps didn’t get the run of the race there when he was second the time before last. The winner, Set The Trend, half stole the race but The Rectifier showed us that he handles the track.

“He has been given the weight he is entitled to on his performances and he is a good size with a touch of class, so I’m not worried about him being towards the top of the handicap.”

Sponsor totesport makes Green Destiny 10/1 favourite, with the lightly-raced four-year-old set to carry 9st. William Haggas’ charge impressed when defeating Proponent (8st 13lb) to win at Newmarket in the spring and was antepost favourite for the Royal Hunt Cup until being rerouted to the 10-furlong Wolferton Handicap at Royal Ascot, a race in which he finished seventh.

Dance And Dance
Royal Hunt Cup runner-up Dance And Dance from the Ed Vaughan yard heads the 77 entries on 9st 10lb and is a 12/1 shot at present, as is the three-year-old Sagramor (8st 7lb), winner of the Britannia Handicap over a mile at Royal Ascot last month from the Richard Hannon-trained Cai Shen (8st 13lb).

Highland Knight (8st 12lb) from the Andrew Balding yard won the Coral Challenge at Sandown on July 2, holding Start Right (9st 34lb) from the Luca Cumani stable in second with Sooraah (8st 8lb) third and Pendragon (8st 7lb) fourth.

The Roger Varian-trained Eton Forever won the Spring Mile at Doncaster in March and is handicapped to carry 9st 5lb, while Confront (9st 9lb) was successful at York in June and acted as pacemaker to Workforce when fifth in the Group One Eclipse Stakes.

Saeed bin Suroor saddled Invisible Man (9st 9lb) to win the Royal Hunt Cup in 2010 and the five-year-old was third in this year’s renewal behind Julienas. He also finished runner-up in the 2010 totesport Mile at Glorious Goodwood.

Others of note include Belgian Bill (8st 8lb), Rhythm Of Light (8st 11lb), Balducci (9st 2lb), Chef (8st 9lb) and 2009 Britannia Handicap winner Fareer (9st 9lb).
