Promising Juveniles Emerge at Newmarket's July Meeting
11/07/11

There were several highlights to emerge from the 2011 July Meeting at Newmarket, a couple of very useful looking juveniles emerged to prominences and will no doubt be worth watching for the remainder of this season and beyond but no story from the three days at HQ surpassed Dream Ahead’s win in the Darley July Cup which provided jockey, Hayley Turner, with the first ever outright Group One winner for a female jockey.

The first race on the first day provided punters with two potential good things for the St Leger in September, with Masked Marvel and Census going off the 2/1 joint favourites and eventually finishing first and second with the John Gosden trained Masked Marvel dourly hanging on to fend off the staying on Census, ridden by Ryan Moore. It has to be said though that neither looked as good as St Leger favourite, Nathaniel when winning at Royal Ascot last month.

Gosden, who also trains Nathaniel, did confirm post race that Masked Marvel (who was cut in the antepost market to 16/1 from 33s for the final classic) will be heading to Doncaster which would be his main target this season. The Richard Hannon trained Census will also be aimed at the race where the extra furlong will surely play in his favour and he too was cut for the race from 16/1 into 14/1.

In the Group Two July Stakes over six furlongs for juveniles, it was the David Brown trained, Frederick Engels who emerged victorious after taking up the running with a furlong to go from the 6/4 favourite and Coventry Stakes runner-up, Roman Soldier. Frederick Engels held on nicely to win by a length and subsequently earn himself a 25/1 quote for next year’s 2000 Guineas. It was the second group win on the trot for the colt, who had previously taken the spoils in the Group Three Windsor Castle Stakes at the Royal meeting.

In the other Group Two on day one, the Princess of Wales Stakes over 1m4f, it was the Sir Michael Stoute and Ryan Moore partnership that grabbed the win when the six year old, Crystal Capello emphatically won by eight lengths. It was only the mare’s fourth run in two years and Stoute now intends to send her to the York Ebor meeting in August to contest the Group One Yorkshire Oaks.

On Friday, the Group Two Cherry Hinton Stakes was won by the smart Godolphin filly, Gamilati, who found a little bit extra than her rivals after they had gone off at a good gallop. Ridden intelligently by Frankie Dettori, the 9/1 shot was kept in contention but unlike the rest, she was able to quicken when it mattered - winning with something to spare and receiving plenty of plaudits in the process. Historically a very useful trial for useful juvenile fillies, Gamilati has been quoted as a 10/1 chance for the 2012 One Thousand Guineas.

The other juvenile who impressed on Friday was the Richard Hannon debutant Rougemont who won the Mawatheeq Maiden Stakes and Hannon is very confident about the Montjeu Colt's ability and could be out at Glorious Goodwood in a couple of weeks before the Dewhurst or Racingpost Trophy will be his ultimate target and has already been quoted at 33/1 to win the 2012 Epsom Derby.

The second day feature was the Group One Falmouth Stakes which in many ways provided a surprise 16/1 winner. The money had gone on the French raider, Sahpresa, a dual winner of the Group One Sun Chariot Stakes over course and distance and who had been backed into 13/8 to win this. However, it was the Sir Henry Cecil trained Timepiece who took the race in great style. After going a good pace early on, Timepiece's jockey, Tom Queally, moved her to the front just over a furlong out and went on to win well over a length up on Sahpresa in second.

Cecil is not altogether certain where he will aim the filly next as there are not too many races that would suit her preferred distance of nine furlongs and a trip to France could be on the horizon.

Dream Ahead and Hayley Turner

The third and final day of the July meeting of course was all about the July Cup, widely regarded as the most important Group One sprint in the British horse racing calendar.

This year it was won in great style by 2010's top rated juvenile, Dream Ahead, who by winning created history for his female jockey, Hayley Turner. This was the first time in racing history in this country that a Group One race had been won outright by a female, who only got the ride due to Jamie Spencer riding for Ballydoyle in the USA.

Dream Ahead was running for only the secong time this season after finishing behind Frankel over a mile last time out but this drop back in trip to six furlongs proved to be a master stroke by trainer, David Simcock. The plan now is to take the Colt to France to contest the Group One Prix Maurice de Gheest next month.
