No Decision Yet on Activate Ebor Bid
12/07/11

Activate, prominent in the ante-post list for next month's Ebor Handicap at York, is by no means a certain runner in the Knavesmire showpiece event with connections seriously considering an alternative bid at Goodwood instead, writes Elliot Slater.

Trained by Michael Bell, (whose Tactician leaped to the head of the Ebor market with an impressive success at York at the weekend), Activate has the profile of a rapidly progressive handicapper and has been a strong fancy in many quarters for some time for the valuable mile-and-a-six furlong handicap on August 20. Bell stressed though that no firm plans have been made and that much will depend on deliberations between himself and Harry Herbert, manager of the Highclere Thoroughbred Racing Syndicate that owns the four-year-old colt. Those placing York Ebor 2011 bets will be keeping a close eye on the horse's plans.

A son of the owners' Epsom Derby winner Motivator, Activate has won four of his 11 career starts, including three of his last four outings. He ended last term winning at Haydock off a mark of 78 before following up off a 7lb higher mark at Yarmouth in September, defeating Cotillion by three-quarters-of-a-length. Starting this season as he ended last, Bell's charge won at Haydock off a mark of 91, showing plenty of stamina and determination to beat the decent Kayef by half-a-length over two miles, then never got into the race and was eased a long way from home when trailing in 16th in the Northumberland Plate at Newcastle at the end of June on unsuitably soft ground.

Generally on offer at 16/1 for the Ebor, Activate would appear an ideal candidate who is on the upgrade, stays well, and prefers the decent ground that normally prevails on the Knavesmire in mid-summer. Bell's other candidate for the race, Tactician, remains a solid 12/1 co-favourite along with Mount Athos and Quest For Peace.
