Work Watchers Left Drooling After Latest Frankel Gallop
14/07/11

There is a small group of professional racing insiders who every morning get up at the crack of dawn to watch the thousands of horses based in and around Newmarket go through their paces on a variety of different gallops. On Wednesday morning Sir Henry Cecil's superstar Frankel did a piece of work that left even seasoned observers looking for superlatives to reflect the training run they had just seen, writes Elliot Slater.

Unbeaten in all seven career starts including at Group 1 level on three of his last four outings, in last season's Dewhurst Stakes, the Qipco 2000 Guineas at the end of April, and the St James's Palace Stakes at Royal Ascot last month, Frankel is being prepared to take on older horses for the first time when he races in the eagerly anticipated Qipco Sussex Stakes at Glorious Goodwood on July 27. Those looking at the Glorious Goodwood betting odds will be very excited by the prospect of the race.

Set to go head-to-head with the brilliant older miler Canford Cliffs in the Goodwood showpiece, most observers believe Frankel will have to be at his very best to gain the day and judging from the reports of his latest gallop he appears to be right at the peak of his powers at present. Settled in behind high-class lead horses Tranquil Tiger and Bullet Train by regular work rider Shane Feathestonhaugh, Frankel travelled beautifully before being asked to go past his rivals, at which he point he quickened up smartly without having to be seriously asked a question, pulling four-lengths clear of group class horses without even turning a hair. Those looking for horse betting tips will have to take notice of the performance.

News of Frankel's exceptional gallop has seen his market position strengthen slightly to a rock solid 11/10 (one firm goes as short as 4/5 now), and Canford Cliffs is now freely on offer at 6/5.
