Long Run Likely to Compete at Both Cheltenham and Aintree Next Year 04/08/11

Long Run, the brilliant Nicky Henderson-trained winner of last season's Cheltenham Gold Cup, will be trained with a view to defending his title at Prestbury Park in mid-March but could also take his chance very nearly four weeks later at Aintree races 2012 in the Grade 1 Betfair Bowl, writes Elliot Slater.

Long Run

Changes to the scheduled dates of the two major jumps festival fixtures mean that instead of their being barely three weeks between the two events there will now be 27 days, allowing those horses who had a hard race at Cheltenham to have more time to recover from their exertions and be more likely to be allowed to take their chances and delight racegoers at Aintree than has proved the case in recent years. Those following the Aintree tips should bear this in mind.

The 2010/11 jumps season belonged to Long Run and his sporting amateur rider Sam Waley-Cohen, who after running well under massive weights in two big handicaps at Cheltenham in the early part of the season then proceeded to demolish a high-class field in the King George VI Chase at Kempton Park before being sent off favourite for jump racing's blue riband event, the Cheltenham Gold Cup.

The breathtaking performance from Long Run at the home of National Hunt racing will live long in the memory, as the young horse drew alongside the two all-time great stable companions Kauto Star and Denman at the second last before winging his way into the lead at the final fence. Staying-on powerfully up the Cheltenham Hill, Waley Cohen's outstanding French bred gelding went on to score comfortably by 7-lengths from Denman, with Kauto Star just holding on for third place from another Paul Nicholls-trained stable companion, What A Friend.

Most punters are currently looking no further than last season's winner when considering the ante-post market for next year's renewal, making Long Run a best priced 11/4 favourite. They go as big as 16/1 bar Henderson's equine superstar.
