Phenomenal Frankel Storms Clear in Race for Cartier Awards
05/08/11

Frankel has already been hailed as one of the greatest horses to have ever graced the English turf and the Sir Henry Cecil-trained colt added weight to his case for inclusion among the elite pantheon of racing legends with a stunning victory in the Group One QIPCO Sussex Stakes at Glorious Goodwood on Wednesday, July 27.

The unbeaten three-year-old, winner of the 2010 Cartier Champion Two-Year-Old Colt Award, now has 136 points after adding the QIPCO Sussex Stakes to earlier Group One wins in the St James’s Palace Stakes and QIPCO 2,000 Guineas so far this year.

That tally places the imposing Galileo colt 52 points clear of his nearest pursuers, the former Australian star So You Think (84 points) and Irish Derby winner Treasure Beach (84), in the Cartier Horse Of The Year standings, while Treasure Beach leads the chasing pack in the Cartier Three-Year-Old Colt category.

Established in 1991 to reward excellence in horseracing, the Cartier Awards are determined by points earned by horses in Pattern races throughout 2011, combined at the end of season with the opinions of a panel of racing journalists and votes from readers of the Racing Post and The Daily Telegraph.

In addition to the eight equine awards, the Cartier/Daily Telegraph Award of Merit goes to the person or persons who, in the opinion of the special 18-strong Cartier Jury, has/have done the most for European racing and/or breeding either over their lifetime or within the past 12 months.

European horseracing’s equivalent of the Oscars will be presented on the evening of Tuesday, November 15, during a glittering ceremony before an invited audience at London’s Dorchester Hotel.

The QIPCO Sussex Stakes had been billed as the “Duel on the Downs” as the race takes place in the sublime setting of Goodwood Racecourse, high on England’s south downs.

The 2011 renewal had Frankel up against the world’s top older miler, the four-year-old Canford Cliffs, who was aiming for a sixth straight Group One triumph, having defeated the great mare Goldikova on his previous start in the Queen Anne Stakes at Royal Ascot.

Frankel turned the race into a procession with a brilliant front-running display of awesome power and breathtaking pace that blunted Canford Cliffs’ trademark acceleration.

The Khalid Abdulla homebred passed the post to rousing cheers, five lengths clear of the Richard Hannon-trained Canford Cliffs who has 80 points in his quest for Cartier Horse Of The Year and Cartier Older Horse recognition.

Nathaniel
Frankel’s main rival for Cartier Three-Year-Old Colt honours could ultimately be the John Gosden-trained Nathaniel (68) who defeated last year’s Investec Derby and Qatar Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe winner Workforce and St Nicholas Abbey to take the summer’s premier mile and a half contest, Ascot’s Group One King George VI & Queen Elizabeth Stakes, sponsored by Betfair, on July 23.

Nathaniel had missed the Investec Derby, won by Pour Moi (66), due to concerns about quick ground and the unique Epsom track, and headed instead to the Group Two King Edward VII Stakes at Royal Ascot, which he duly won impressively.

So You Think, brilliant winner of the Coral-Eclipse Stakes at Sandown last month from Workforce, heads the Cartier Older Horse category but faces stiff competition with Midday slamming Snow Fairy to land a third victory in the Group One Markel Insurance Nassau Stakes at Goodwood on Saturday July 30, and Goldikova returning to the winner’s enclosure at Deauville on Sunday, July 31.

Midday, winner of the 2009 Grade One Breeders’ Cup Filly And Mare Turf, now has 76 points in the division and the five-year-old was clearly back to her best in clinching her sixth career Group One triumph by two lengths from last year’s dual Oaks winner.

The Freddy-Head-trained Goldikova has a remarkable fourth consecutive Breeders’ Cup Mile victory in November as her ultimate aim and she bounced back from defeat at the hands of Canford Cliffs to take the 14th Group One prize of her career in the Prix Rothschild, a race that she had won three times previously.

Goldikova, who was crowned Cartier Older Horse winner in 2009 and 2010, and Cartier Horse of the Year last year, took the mile prize eased down from fellow top-class six-year-old, Sahpresa, who reversed form with her Group One Etihad Airways Falmouth Stakes conqueror, Timepiece.

Earlier in the month, on July 17, Blue Bunting added to her QIPCO 1,000 Guineas success with victory in the Group One Darley Irish Oaks for trainer Mahmood Al Zarooni. The Godolphin filly has 78 points in the Cartier Three-Year-old Filly standings, ahead of Golden Lilac (72), winner of the Poule d’Essai des Pouliches and Prix de Diane Longines, while Misty For Me, who in June triumphed over Midday to win the Group One Stobart Ireland Pretty Polly Stakes by six lengths, also has 72 points.

Opinion Poll (45) drew to within three points of current leader Fame And Glory (48) in the Cartier Stayer category after a determined victory in the Group Two Artemis Goodwood Cup over two miles at Goodwood on Thursday, July 28.

The Al Zarooni-trained five-year-old had finished runner-up to Fame And Glory in the Group One Gold Cup at Royal Ascot in June.

The Cartier Two-Year-Old divisions are beginning to come to life with Family One and Chandlery jointly topping the present Cartier Two-Year-Old Colt Award standings.

The Yves Barberot-trained Family One made it four wins from five starts with an impressive three-length victory in the Group Two Prix Robert Papin at Maisons-Laffitte on July 24.

Chandlery, trained by Richard Hannon, took the Group Two Veuve Clicquot Vintage Stakes at Goodwood on July 27, a race in which third-placed Red Duke was unlucky in running. The John Quinn-trained juvenile had previously defeated Chandlery to take the Group Two 32Red.com Superlative Stakes at Newmarket’s July Festival.

The unbeaten Hannon-trained Harbour Watch is expected to make it to the leader board if he continues the form that saw him storm to success in the Group Two Tanqueray Richmond Stakes at Goodwood on July 29.

Best Terms
Group Two Queen Mary Stakes winner Best Terms, also trained by Hannon, is equal top of the Cartier Two-Year-Old Filly division alongside the Al Zarooni-trained Irish Thoroughbred Marketing Cherry Hinton Stakes heroine Gamilati.

There is no change in the Cartier Sprinter category with the brilliant Group One Darley July Cup victor Dream Ahead (48) jointly leading the list with Society Rock (48), ahead of Prohibit (45).

Harry Herbert, Cartier’s racing consultant, commented today: “We have seen so many fabulous races this season and the victory of Frankel in the QIPCO Sussex Stakes is one that will surely be recorded in history among the greats.

“The atmosphere at Glorious Goodwood last Wednesday was incredible as Frankel dominated his ‘duel’ with Canford Cliffs and then received the kind of reception reserved only for a very special horse.

“But the fantastic races have come thick and fast this year. Frankel’s mighty performance came only days after Nathaniel had wowed Ascot with a brilliant win in the King George VI & Queen Elizabeth Stakes.

“Barely had the dust settled on the QIPCO Sussex Stakes than Midday made history with a third Markel Insurance Nassau Stakes triumph and the great mare Goldikova took a remarkable fourth running of the Prix Rothschild.

“August brings important festivals at Deauville and York when we can expect to see the stars of this great sport produce further displays of excellence that could well earn them Cartier Awards at the season’s end.”
