Tominator Team Eye Crack at Doncaster’s Mallard Handicap
31/08/11

Reg Hollinshead’s stable star Tominator could be set to appear at Doncaster’s prestigious St Leger meeting after it was revealed that plans are afoot for the Northumberland Plate winner to take his chance in the Ladbrokes Mallard Handicap on September 9, writes Elliot Slater.

Those with plans for 2011 St Leger festival betting might have to adjust.

Run over the St Leger course and distance of one-mile, six-furlongs and 132 yards, the galloping nature of the Town Moor track seems sure to suit Tominator, a horse who tends to come with a long swooping run rather as he did when springing a 25/1 surprise in the Northumberland Plate at Newcastle in June, providing his 85-year-old trainer with one of his biggest successes in recent times as he led a furlong from home then stayed on strongly to record a length-and-three-quarter verdict over the useful staying handicapper Montaff.

His win at Gosforth Park provided apprentice jockey Paul Pickard with the biggest success of his fledgling career and Pickard has remained in the saddle for the most recent outings for Hollinshead’s grey Generous gelding, finishing a staying-on eighth to Tactician in the listed John Smith’s Silver Cup Handicap at York’s July fixture, then last weekend running another fine race when going down with all guns blazing in finishing runner-up to the capable Berling in the listed Totepool Chester Stakes over 13 furlongs on a course that wouldn’t obviously appear to suit the long-striding stayer. Those involved in betting on horse racing will remember the exciting race.

While he remains in good form Hollinshead is of the opinion that there is little to be lost in keeping Tominator on the go before he heads off to his winter break and the Mallard Handicap looks the ideal race as long as he shows no signs of fatigue following his run at Chester. Haydock’s Old Borough Cup is an alternative event that connections have also mentioned as being considered for their charge.
