Doumen Considers Betfred Cesarewitch for Diamond Boy
01/09/11

Diamond Boy (9st 8lb and 25/1 with sponsor Betfred) could bid to give France a rare victory in the historic £160,000 Betfred Cesarewitch (4.15pm) at Newmarket’s Rowley Mile racecourse on Saturday, October 8, Future Champions Day, which features both the £300,000 Group One Dubai Dewhurst Stakes (2.25pm) and £150,000 Group One Shadwell Middle Park Stakes (3.00pm).

The Francois Doumen-trained five-year-old is one of 114 entries remaining in the two and a quarter-mile Betfred Cesarewitch, the second leg of the traditional Autumn Double, the weights for which were revealed yesterday, Wednesday, August 31.

The five-year-old delighted his trainer in a Listed contest over an extended 12 furlongs at Deauville on August 2, his most recent race, when a length runner-up to last year’s Group One Melbourne Cup winner Americain, with the pair carrying level weights.

Diamond Boy is a Listed race winner, having scored in that grade on heavy ground over a mile and three quarters at Saint-Cloud in October.

Doumen revealed today: “I have got to study the handicap so I have not made a definite plan yet regarding the Betfred Cesarewitch.

“There are other possibilities in France. He is French and he gets the premiums in France but I need to consider the Betfred Cesarewitch and then decide.

“That was a great performance at Deauville last time and if we choose to go to the Betfred Cesarewitch, the distance will be no problem to him at all, he will stay forever.

“He needs soft ground and the end of August is a bit early to make a firm decision about where he is going.”

French winners were once not so rare and when Monsieur L’Amiral became the most recent cross-Channel victor in 1946, he was the fifth French winner in 25 years.

Tuscan Gold (8st) is the current 10/1 Betfred favourite for the heritage handicap. Sir Mark Prescott’s progressive charge, successful twice and runner-up three times from five starts last term, was unfortunate to unseat Stevie Donohoe when leaving the stalls on his recent seasonal reappearance at York on August 18.

Fox Hunt
The Mark Johnston-trained Fox Hunt, winner of the Duke of Edinburgh Handicap at Royal Ascot and half a length fourth behind Opinion Poll in the Group Two Goodwood Cup, heads the weights on 9st 10lb. Johnston has won the race with Spirit Of Love (1998) and Contact Dancer (2004).

Tactician (9st 8lb), trained by Michael Bell for the Queen, defeated Fox Hunt to win the Listed John Smith’s Silver Cup at York in July and was runner-up at the same course behind Moyenne Corniche in the Betfred Ebor on August 20.

Nicky Henderson has twice captured the Betfred Cesarewitch thanks to Landing Light (2003) and Caracciola (2008). He has a talented duo going forward in Sentry Duty (8st 11lb) and the talented mare Veiled (8st 9lb) successful in the Ascot Stakes at the Royal meeting in June.

The Roger Charlton-trained Keys (8st 8lb) was a smart bumper horse and has won his latest two starts on the Flat, notably the Brown Jack Handicap over two miles at Ascot in July.

The last Irish-trained winner of the Betfred Cesarewitch was Leg Spinner for Tony Martin in 2007 and there are nine entries from the Emerald Isle this time.

Dermot Weld, triumphant in 1992 with subsequent Group One Melbourne Cup winner Vintage Crop, could rely on Rainforest Magic (8st 1lb) while Martin may run Buy Back Bob (8st 4lb) and fellow Irish handler David Wachman could saddle Mount Athos (9st 2lb).

Aidan O’Brien’s quintet includes Group Three Queen’s Vase fourth Regent Street (8st 6lb) and Melrose Handicap third Apache (8st 1lb), while Noel Meade could run top-class hurdler Donnas Palm (8st).

Aaim To Prosper
A fantastic entry also features Petara Bay (9st 8lb), trained by Robert Mills, who won the Summer Stakes at Goodwood on July 30, while last year’s winner, the Brian Meehan-trained Aaim to Prosper (9st 7lb) could bid for further success, although the Jim Goldie-trained La Vecchia Scuola (8st 5lb) a fast-finishing neck second on that occasion, may attempt to go one place better on 24lb improved terms.

Diamond Boy defeated the Ian Williams-trained Ile De Re (8st 8lb) by three and a half lengths at level weights in a Saint-Cloud Listed contest in October. Ile De Re, set to receive 14lb from his old rival, landed the Shergar Cup Stayers at Ascot in August and was a good fourth in a 13-furlong Chester Listed race on August 20.

John Dunlop last won the Betfred Cesarewitch with Mountain Lodge in 1982 and could look to Queen Alexandra Stakes hero Swingkeel (9st 1lb) while Godolphin trainer Saeed bin Suroor has Darley Sun (9st) successful in 2009 when trained by David Simcock.

Sir Henry Cecil may run Ajaan (8st 12lb) as the trainer bids for a second win in the race he landed in 1971 with Orosio.

There is a possible raider from Germany in the form of the Waldemar Hickst-trained Lacateno (9st 8lb), winner of a two-mile Listed contest at Hamburg earlier this year.

Others of note are the David Pipe-trained pair of Big Occasion (8st 9lb) and 2010 Chester Cup hero Mamlook (8st 12lb) as well as the likes of Activate (8st 10lb), Dazinski (8st 5lb), Mountain Hiker (8st 9lb) and Dayia (8st 7lb).
