Leading St Leger Meeting Races – Champagne Stakes
02/09/11

The final day of the St Leger meeting needs starting in style and that’s probably why one of the big supporting events on the card is chosen to lead the way in the shape of the Champagne Stakes – one of the biggest races at the meeting restricted to the juvenile division. Those looking at Horse racing tips will be looking ahead to this race.

Originally established in 1823 the race was at first open to horses of both sexes and run over 6F for much of its duration. But gradually changes were made to the race which not only saw it grow in stature but also length as the Champagne Stakes has an extra furlong added to its distance in 1961. The final change to the conditions for the race came about in 1988 when the race was finally restricted to just colts and geldings.

The race provides an ideal stepping stone in the leading two-year-olds progression through the ranks and the winner will often be targeted at the Dewhurst Stakes (Group 1) on the Newmarket Rowley Mile in the following month.

The royal blue silks of the Goldolphin team have been prevalent in the race the last two years taking the last couple of runnings via Poet’s Voice and Saamidd, although the latter went on run in the Dewhurst Stakes, all he got was a rear view of Frankel who repeated the dose in the 2000 Guineas earlier this year. Of course Frankel was also successful on the same card last year at Doncaster at a lower level but has gone on to prove one of the equine stars of 2011.

If there is one jockey that has made the Champagne Stakes his own then it would be Frankie Dettori who has won the race five times since 2000, scoring in three consecutive years (2000-2) for now ex-trainer David Loder and taking the last two runnings of the race for Godolphin.

Although he still has work to do to catch leading rider in the race Bill Scott who took the race nine times in the 1800’s. He is part of what make's the race great for St. leger betting.

The Champagne Stakes for two-year-olds gets the final day of the St Leger meeting off to a sparkling start.
