Best Terms Warm Order Favourite to Land Cheveley Park Stakes
22/09/11

This weekend’s Group One Cheveley Park Stakes at Newmarket for two year old fillies looks to have attracted a decent field with several of the leading protagonists holding early entries in next year's 1,000 Guineas.

Best Terms

The unbeaten dual Group Two winner, Best Terms, heads the early betting for the race and looks a real classic prospect. Having impressively won her maiden over five furlongs at Windsor first time out in April, she went on to land the odds in a Conditions race also over five furlongs at Newbury in May before her trainer, Richard Hannon, sent her to Royal Ascot. However, she was not considered to be amongst the best juvenile fillies around in June and went off as a 12/1 shot in th Group 2 Queen Mary Stakes. Nonetheless, she soon made it a hat-trick of wins with a very valiant effort, seeing off the short priced favourite, Shumoos by a short head.

Her latest run came over six furlongs in the Group 2 Lowther Stakes at York's Ebor meeting, where, despite being ignored once again by the pundits and Bookmakers, she made all at 11/1, finishing two lengths clear of the David Wachman trained Irish raider, Fire Lily, with Shumoos once again behind her, this time finishing well down the field in 10th.

Her Lowther Stakes win finally convinced the odds compilers to take notice of her and she has been installed as the 16/1 third favourite for the 2012 1,000 Guineas and she is as short as 5/4 to win the Cheveley Park Stakes on Saturday. Favourites in the Cheveley Park Stakes have a good record overall with four outright favourites and one joint favourite winning since 2001 and Best Terms is certainly the one to beat and looks capable off extending that trend.

Fire Lily in fact opposes again here but not only was she beaten by Best Terms in the ‘Lowther’ she was also behind her at Royal Ascot and it is difficult to see how she can reverse that form. She did run a good race at the end of last month when finishing second just under two lengths behind Maybe in the Group One Moyglare Stud Stakes at the Curragh, over 7 furlongs but she might have to be second best again in this. Maybe incidentally, trained by Aidan O’Brien is the current 5/1 antepost favourite for the 1,000 Guineas next season but victory for Best Terms is likely to see Hannon's runner challenge O'Brien's star juvenile filly at the head of the betting for next year's classic.

Irish trainer Ger Lyons sends over Lightening Pearl, the winner last time out of the Group 3 Go and Go Round Tower Stakes over six furlongs at the Curragh at the back end of August to take her chances at Newmarket. She won that race in scintillating style by five lengths from another Wachman filly, Experience and could be the biggest danger to Best Terms.

Of the rest, only Shumoos, who is already held by Best Terms and the Godolphin entry, Gamilati, also beaten by Best Terms in the Lowther, offer any real threat but both must show significant improvement to reverse form with Richard Hannon's runner, who is clearly an exciting prospect and the one to beat.
