Juvenile Stars Out in Force for Dubai Future Champions Day
04/10/11

Dubai Future Champions Day at Newmarket on Saturday, October 8, is set to be a superb day’s racing with a host of potential stars on show, headed by a total of 16 colts going forward, including one supplementary entry, for the Group One £317,500 Dubai Dewhurst Stakes (3.10pm).

The seven-furlong juvenile contest on the Rowley Mile course has proven an unrivalled pointer to future Classic success over the years. Rock Of Gibraltar, Pennekamp, Zafonic, El Gran Senor and Wollow returned to Newmarket the following spring to triumph in the QIPCO 2000 Guineas, while recent winners New Approach, Sir Percy, Dr Devious and Generous have subsequently captured the Investec Derby.

Last year’s victor Frankel also highlighted the calibre of Dubai Dewhurst Stakes winners by taking the QIPCO 2000 Guineas on April 30 in devastating fashion before annexing both the St James’s Palace Stakes and Sussex Stakes.

Spiritual Star has been supplemented for this year’s race by owners Thurloe Thoroughbreds at a cost of £20,000. The Andrew Balding-trained colt was a comprehensive six-length winner of the Haafhd EBF Maiden over the same course and distance on September 23.

James Stafford, racing manager to owner Thurloe Thoroughbreds, commented: “Spiritual Star won very nicely at Newmarket and he looked like a potentially smart horse in the making.

“We are very thrilled with him and we are stepping a little bit into the unknown but Jimmy Fortune said that he deserved a go in a Group race.

“We had the option of going to Newmarket or waiting until the Horris Hill Stakes (October 22) at Newbury and we thought that we would run him while he is in such good form.

“He is an improving horse and he is very straightforward. Touch wood, everything has gone well with him so far and we need to find out how good he is.”

Aidan O’Brien has won the Dubai Dewhurst Stakes with Rock Of Gibraltar (2001) and Beethoven (2009). The Ballydoyle handler is responsible for six of the two-year-olds headed by Group One National Stakes victor Power, Group Two Beresford Stakes scorer David Livingston and Daddy Long Legs, successful in the Group Two Juddmonte Royal Lodge Stakes at Newmarket’s Cambridgeshire Meeting on September 24.

Fellow Irish trainer Jim Bolger, who recorded a hat-trick of Dubai Dewhurst Stakes victories with Teofilo (2006), New Approach (2007) and Intense Focus (2008), may this year be represented by a son of the first-named, Parish Hall, who took second in the Group Two Futurity Stakes at the Curragh on August 20.

Roger Varian, who recorded a first Group One success on Sunday with Nahrain in the Prix l’Opera at Longchamp, may aim for another big-race victory with the unbeaten Ektihaam, while John Gosden, who himself enjoyed Group One glory at Longchamp with Elusive Kate, has Newbury Listed winner Fencing entered.

Other remaining entries include the John Quinn-trained Red Duke, successful in the Group Two 32Red.com Superlative Stakes at Newmarket in July, and the Richard Hannon-trained pair of Bronterre and Group Two Champagne Stakes victor Trumpet Major.

The Group One Emaar Middle Park Stakes (2.35pm), worth £163,500, was won last year by the brilliant sprinter Dream Ahead, who followed up Group One victories in the Darley July Cup and Haydock Sprint Cup with a famous success over Goldikova in the Group One Prix de la Foret at Longchamp on Sunday.

Further juvenile action is provided by the £60,000 Group Two Vision.ae Rockfel Stakes (4.25pm), which has received an entry of 18 fillies, while 24 have been entered in the mile £34,000 Group Three Autumn Stakes (5.00pm).

The older generation are also in action on Dubai Future Champions Day, with 14 horses going forward for the opening seven-furlong £80,000 Group Two Burj Khalifa Challenge Stakes (2.05pm) headed by impressive Group Two Lennox Stakes victor Strong Suit, while the £50,000 Darley Stakes (5.35pm) over nine furlongs has attracted an entry of 23 including talented Group One performer Sri Putra.

A seven-race card also features the £160,000 Betfred Cesarewitch (3.50pm), one of the highlights of the autumn calendar, and the 64 five-day confirmations for the two and a quarter-mile heritage handicap include market leaders Veiled, Tuscan Gold and Keys. A maximum field of 34 can go to post.
