Norwegian Challenge at Newmarket
04/10/11

Norwegian handler Rune Haugen is hoping that Giant Sandman can make a winning raid across the North Sea in the £80,000 Group Two Burj Khalifa Challenge Stakes (2.05pm) over seven furlongs at Newmarket on Dubai Future Champions Day, Saturday, October 8.

The four-year-old has been in scintillating form in Scandinavia this year and recorded a comfortable length success in the Group Three Polar Cup over the same distance at Ovrevoll in June.

He warmed up for his Newmarket assignment with another cosy victory, as he beat Irish Group Three winner Dingle View by a length and a half in an extended five-furlong Listed contest at Taby in Sweden on September 11.

Haugen revealed today: “Giant Sandman heads to Newmarket for the Burj Khalifa Challenge Stakes. He is the champion here in Norway - we started running him in sprints this year and he won the Polar Cup in tremendous style.

“Silverside was third in that race and he went on to win the Group Two Golden Peitsche at Baden-Baden. Our horse won very easily on his latest start over five and a half furlongs, when he was last turning into the straight and just flew past them.

“I sent over Steve’s Champ in 2004 and he ran a cracking race to be second in the Rous Stakes at Newmarket, while Sagittarius was runner-up in the Ormonde Stakes and the Cumberland Lodge Stakes.

“I know that the racing is a lot tougher than in Norway but Giant Sandman is a serious horse and I think that the seven furlongs at Newmarket will be perfect for him.

“We have no whips in Norway but Giant Sandman is a proper racehorse and he doesn’t need any encouragement. I will bring over my jockey Rafael Schistl to ride him and I am sure that he will give the horse a smack or two - it might make him even better!

“I also gave Tertullus an entry in the Darley Stakes but he will run in a Listed race at Stockholm instead.”

Giant Sandman will face some stiff opposition in the Burj Khalifa Challenge Stakes, with the 14 five-day confirmations also including the Richard Hannon-trained Strong Suit, successful in the Group Two Lennox Stakes at Glorious Goodwood, and Chachamaidee, who was second in the Group One Kingdom Of Bahrain Sun Chariot Stakes for Sir Henry Cecil at Newmarket on September 24.
