Melbourne Cup
28/10/11

The Melbourne Cup takes place next week and the race promises to be another exciting affair.

The race is the biggest of the year in Australia and takes place over a distance of 3,200 metres (just under two miles) and attracts horse from across the globe.

Whilst the current favourite to collect honours is Americain the Australian press seems intend on a continuation of the on-going obsession with Godolphin, represented this year by Modun and Lost In The Moment

Neither horse is expected to really challenge for honours with Modun priced at 28/1 and Lost In The Moment available at odds of 40/1 but the headlines have appeared to present them as big chances.

This may be explained by the pattern of the local press building up Godolphin runners before savaging them if they do not win or by the fact that the powerful organisation has provided three runners-up but no winners of the race.

Either way, those looking for some serious prospects of collecting winnings would probably do best to look elsewhere.

Amongst the contenders the chances of Dunaden should be considered. The horse has plenty of experience and the odds of 7/1 looking very tempting. It should be noted that Craig Williams is booked to partner Dunaden but is facing a riding ban and should his appeal prove fruitless then Christophe Lemaire has been lined up as a replacement.

Much the same could be said for Jukebox Jury. The Mark Johnson-trained animal has won 9 of 21 races and the price available of 12/1 with horse betting punter looks a little generous.

Meanwhile, each way backers appear to be favouring some of the bigger priced entries, including Modun.

Those of interest include Midas Touch (20/1), Tullamore (22/1) and Red Cadeaux (25/1), with perhaps the latter looking the best value when it comes to horse bets.
