King George Possible Rubi Misses Betfair Chase
17/11/11

Irish challenger Rubi Light, quietly fancied to give Long Run and Kauto Star something to think about in the Betfair Chase at Haydock at the weekend, will miss the big three-mile contest having failed to please handler Robbie Hennessey in his final workout prior to the big race, writes Elliot Slater.

The six-year-old, a possible contender for the Grade 1 King George VI Chase at Kempton Park on Boxing Day, had been suffering from a virus at the start of November and was treated with antibiotics before returning to full training, but Hennessy believes the last effects of the illness haven't completely left the gelded son of Network and he refuses to risk him against the best chasers in the business if not 100% fit and well. Those following the King George VI Chase betting should remember this.

Rubi Light showed progressive form throughout last season winning at Sligo and Punchestown on his first two outings over fences before later in the term running a solid second to the smart Golden Silver at Fairyhouse in January. His subsequent 10-length defeat of the very decent Roberto Goldback in the Grade 2 Red Mills Chase at Gowran Park in January convinced connections he was worth sending to the Cheltenham Festival the following month and he didn't let the side down in running a great race to finish a close third to the admirable Albertas Run in the Grade 1 Ryanair Chase. Anyone looking at the Kempton Park Betting should bear this in mind.

Making his seasonal bow at Gowran Park at the start of last month, Rubi Light appeared to have all bases covered having jumped brilliantly throughout in the Pricewaterhouse Coopers Champion Chase, only to fall at the final fence when well clear, handing victory on a plate to Queen Mother Champion Chase winner Sizing Europe. Desperately frustrating as that loss must have been to connections it at least demonstrated that their horse remains on the up-and-up and he would be a fascinating contender at Kempton if allowed to take his chance.
