Desert Cry In With A Shout for Ladbroke Hurdle
08/12/11

Desert Cry (10st 10lb) is set to try and give connections a bumper payday in The Ladbroke at Ascot on Saturday, December 17, after the weights were revealed yesterday for the £150,000 Listed handicap hurdle, one of the highlights of Ascot’s two-day Christmas Meeting.

The five-year-old, who is part-owned by Everton manager David Moyes, enjoyed a productive first season over hurdles last term, taking second in the Grade Two Premier Kelso Hurdle and ending his campaign by coming home fifth in the Grade Two Top Novices’ Hurdle at Aintree’s Grand National meeting.

Donald McCain’s charge made a winning seasonal return at Haydock on November 18 when he recorded a game neck success under top-weight in a competitive handicap hurdle and is rated a 14/1 chance with the race sponsor for The Ladbroke.

McCain revealed: “Desert Cry has come out of his run at Haydock in good form. I spoke to part-owner David Moyes on Tuesday evening and the plan is to go to Ascot.

“I was disappointed with him at Aintree at the end of last season when I thought that he would go close. I expected him to run well at Haydock, although I did just think that he would need the run, so there is a possibility that there might be a bit of improvement in him.

“He has gone up 8lb for that win but there is no point in complaining about it as races like The Ladbroke are where we want to be.”

The weights for The Ladbroke are headed by the Paul Nicholls-trained Brampour (8/1 & 11st 12lb), who could bid for a third major handicap hurdle success this season following a Listed win at Ascot in October and victory in the Grade Three Greatwood Handicap Hurdle at Cheltenham the following month.

Nicholls is also responsible for Ladbrokes’ current favourite, Prospect Wells (6/1 & 10st 9lb), while other notable contenders among the 37 remaining entries include recent Aintree scorer Featherbed Lane (10/1 & 10st 11lb), Greatwood Handicap Hurdle runner-up Olofi (10/1 & 10st 3lb), French import Rajdhani Express (10/1 & 10st 6lb) and Empire Levant (12/1 & 10st 7lb), who is part-owned by Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson.
