Tanya's Blog - Thursday 9th August 2012

It’s a scorcher. The sun has got his hat on, hip, hip, hooray. And much has gone on since last I wrote. Firstly I’ve been to see Ted – and wished I hadn’t, it was woeful, dreadful although many disagree.

Office has been rewardingly busy after Glorious Goodwood, just scaling the heights of Everest on my desk and it won’t be too many more hours before it’s been conquered. And already focus has been redirected to York, Doncaster and more immediately the Shergar Cup.

The boys, Gerard, Nick and Andrew, have been grafting really hard and with so much enthusiasm. Gerard was off to the Shergar Cup press morning in London to capture some shots of the jockeys taking part. Nick is editing the package explaining the scoring system and Andrew is assisting me with footage conversion of races dating back 40 years.

Plenty of racing going on today and Jessie J is in concert after Sandown’s meeting this evening, so get to Esher early!

Thought the Dispatches programme on gambling had some big holes in it and didn’t really explore the ability to bet 24 hours a day and for those aged 16 to bet on the lottery, I could go on.

No doubt the majority of you are glued by the Olympics, don’t take this wrong when I say I’ve had it on in the background, but in my own independent world big things have been happening in the NFL. New Orleans Saints coach Sean Payton has to serve a year suspension yet they still won their opening pre-season game 17-10 over the Arizona Cardinals.

Just how the scenario will pan out in the main season will be reflected in their price but not to have someone so influential calling the unorthodox plays during high intensity games WILL make a difference! There’s dissention in the ranks and on the sidelines for the New York Jets - not good for a team chaired by someone who oozes confidence.

Then in the world of greyhounds, although my attendance is not as regular is it used to be I still see and talk to those in the thick of things on a weekly basis and the vibes are not good now for Wimbledon. With Paul Garland being given the green light to train at Hove it leaves a huge hole in the kennel strength at Plough Lane and the urgency to fill it is not quite what those who hold the sport dear to their hearts would hope.

Oxford’s future also seems far from bright and the shadow cast across the sport feels like déjà vu. The arguments rearing their head all could have been solved many years ago. Apathy then means closures and they only have themselves and self-interest to blame!

Kiawah Island gets the nod for the USPGA, remember when it held the Ryder Cup and there was those great overhead shots of the nervy players driving across the inviting lake. I can’t wait to relive those moments later today and for the next few days. Geoff Ogilvy will once again carry my hard earned in his bag, so too Webb Simpson who seems to have been conveniently ignored.

Rory McIlroy woke up last week but I want to see more consistency before I take a chance on him. This is the time of year to expect a big run from Charlie Hoffman, he plays well when you least expect it so watch out there could be a bold top ten finish by him.
