Captain's Blog - Tuesday 28th August
I enjoyed my day at Epsom yesterday and managed to make a few quid as well. It is always nice to back a winner, but it seems so much sweeter when you are on course watching it first-hand. I have stated before that there is nothing like having a cash-bet on-course and collecting and I stand by that. It beats simply watching your exchange account increase in value. Cash in hand is so much better than a funds wallet on a computer. Do not get me wrong I am a big fan of the exchanges I just like cash as well.
Richard Hughes was brilliant on Long Awaited yesterday in the five-furlong sprint. He timed his challenge to perfection to get up close home. Unfortunately he was edged out on our blog selection, Rockinante, in a later race. He did nothing wrong, I am afraid the stamina reserves just ran dry when he and we needed them most. Such is the way of things I guess.
Today I am keen on the chances of Lisa's Legacy in the opener at Epsom. This filly has shown decent form in maidens and looks to have got a fair mark for her nursery debut. She will not be much of a price, but should win, thereby recouping some of yesterday's losses.
There was no University Challenge in the McNae household last night. My wife who secured a 4-3 win last week decided that a drink or two with mates in the pub was the way to go instead. Clearly she feared a backlash after last week’s win. I must admit I was up for the challenge and was anxious to level the scores, but her tactical move and the lure of a cooling pint thwarted my attempt to level the series. She can run but she cannot hide though and next week I am determined to put the record straight and level up the match.
I have a few days away from the office now, but will be back with gusto on Friday in the Studio where Jonathan Neesom will be my guest. So all roads lead to Friday as far as I am concerned and then it will be time to focus on Monday night and another round of University Challenge. I am seeking revenge and nothing will stop me, other than questions on opera!
Have a good day.
