St Leger
31/08/12

Camelot goes into the final Classic of the season, the St Leger at Doncaster, aiming to do what no colt has done since Njinsky in 1970 by winning the English Triple Crown.

I’m A Dreamer

Aidan O’Brien’s unbeaten three-year old won the first leg of his attempt at the Triple Crown at Newmarket in the 2000 Guineas in May over 1m. The son of Montjeu came with a late surging run to deny French Fifteen by a neck.

The Derby at Epsom was always his main target for the season and he made no mistake of adding his second Classic in as many races with an easy five length win ahead of the field.

Now the challenge is the longer trip of 1m6f, the furthest he will have been so far in his career. Straight after his success in the Derby, connections highlighted the St Leger as their next aim, despite other lucrative middle distance races being scheduled around this period across Europe.

Camelot’s last racecourse outing was at the Curragh, where he handled testing conditions to beat Born To Sea by two lengths in the Irish Derby. Just five runners contested the Classic in Ireland which led to O’Brien’s runner going off the 1/5 favourite with Unibet.

It is likely that Camelot will also go off odds-on favourite once again at Doncaster but at this stage, it looks like the final Classic of the season will attract a high quality field. The dangers to Camelot include Great Heavens, who is also unbeaten this campaign with two Group successes to her name. Connections have had this race in mind after she won the Irish Oaks at the Curragh back in July.

Main Sequence could also get another shot at the Derby winner after finishing second to him at Epsom. Since that run he has finished fourth in the Grand Prix De Paris and second in the Great Voltigeur at York. A step up in trips is expected to suit though at Doncaster.
