Captain's Blog - Wednesday 12th September

The St Leger festival starts today and as ever at Doncaster previous course form or all-weather form will be crucial to finding winners. I bracket Town Moor with Ascot and York in terms of the type of horse that acts well there and I am sure that we will see plenty of winners this week who also have form on the all-weather. It is a very fair trac, however, and a good one to punt at.

My thoughts on the Leger itself is that I want Camelot to win and thereby secure the Triple Crown and he is a worthy odds-on favorite. Having said that there is no way on earth I would back him, because in simple terms he may not stay. Nobody knows if he will get the trip, and to say his class will get him through is not a concept that have any sympathy with. Usain Bolt is a classy athlete, but do we really think his class would get him through over 400 metres or even against Mo Farah over 5,000 metres? Camelot's connections are hopeful he will stay, but do not know if he will, and are guarded over his chances of doing so. If he is to win he will need the requisite stamina and that is the bottom line.

My selection today is Strictly Silver in the 4.45 at Doncaster. This horse ran a blinder to be second when getting a bad trip at Chester last time and is a previous course winner at Doncaster. He has only had three starts this season and as such is relatively fresh compared to many of his rivals. I suspect he will be well backed because his run at Doncaster last time has been well documented, but he is well worth backing today.

I am also keen on Cheworee in the 5.15. This horse is returning to five furlongs today, which will suit after shaping well over six furlongs on his last two starts. He is worth backing each-way.

Today's Selection

4.45 Doncaster - Strictly Silver

5.15 Doncaster - Cheworee ( each way )
