Angus McNae

Captain's Blog - Saturday 24th November

Both my selections yesterday ran well to finish in the frame but failed narrowly to hit the target, which is a tad frustrating. Onwards and upwards and today there is some really good racing to have a go at.

Before I do anything else it would be wrong not to acknowledge the passing of Larry Hagman during the night. Larry played the incomparable JR Ewing in Dallas and I do not mind admitting that when I was a kid Dallas was a must in the McNae household every Saturday night. At the time I liked JR because he used to make my Dad laugh, now I recognize that he was played by a charismatic man in Larry Hagman, who will be sorely missed.

Back to the racing and to my thoughts on the Betfair Chase. First up I will not be having a bet because a combination of the ground and an uncertainty about what Long Run will be capable of this season make it a very difficult betting medium.

I suspect that Long Run will be too good for his rivals, but I have always harbored doubts about his jumping under pressure and have never backed him in the past and am not about to start doing so now.

Silviniaco Conti was impressive in the Charlie Hall and is a rising star of the chasing game. There have to be some doubts about the ground for him, but he could easily win under Ruby. Weird Al is an interesting runner who I have a feeling is best fresh. He won the Charlie Hall last year and off a layoff could be dangerous here. All in all, for me, a race to watch and not bet in which I know is boring, but losing money is not fun and if I had a bet in a race when I was this uncertain I would kick myself if I lost. Long Run is the most likely winner, but I would be far from surprised if he was beaten.

My selection today is Saphir River in the 2.30 Haydock. He was very impressive over fences at Uttoxeter last time out and had an excellent record in France before joining the Lucinda Russell team. He will be suited by the ground and fixed brush hurdles and for me is a cracking each-way bet in a competitive race.

Today's selection:

2.30 Haydock Saphir River (8/1 bet365) ( each way )
