Flat-track bully Conti one to take on

My lays of the week column is going OK. With Sprinter Sacre out of the frame and Kings Palace well beaten on Wednesday I am half way to a full house. However, as Bruce Springsteen said in his excellent song Better Days, sometimes you feel you are halfway to heaven but just a mile out of hell.

We will be a step closer to Utopia if Peace and Co is beaten in the Triumph Hurdle. I think he is a lay as he is a fizzy individual who pulls hard and puts his head in the air under pressure. Now I know he is talented and won in a good time first time out this season, but he will surely be vulnerable late on in this race given his fiery nature. Lay him in the win market.

I am also against Silviniaco Conti because I honestly believe he is best on a flat track. The grind of 3 1/4 miles around Cheltenham's undulations will probably see him succumb to the sort of defeat he suffered in the race last year. I have already suggested we lay him in the win market.

If those two lays are beaten then so much the better. However, it is always nice to back a winner and as far as the Gold Cup is concerned I think the race is an attritional stayer that is invariably won by a grinder rather than a speed horse.

This year I think we should be backing two horses each way, Holywell and Lord Windermere. Holywell showed that he was bang on course for this race with a confidence building success at Kelso with the all important headgear back on. He goes well at the track and is a strong stayer. Lord Windermere won this race last year and a repeat is certainly not out of the question. He has been specifically prepared for this, stays better than a number of his rivals and has the brilliant Davy Russell on board which is a big plus. With those two running for us and being against Silviniaco Conti, this is going to be a pivotal race for us today.

With a bit of luck we can round off a decent week with a profitable final day.

Good luck!
