Richard Hannon Looking Forward to Glorious Goodwood
21/07/10

Richard Hannon hosted a media visit to his main yard at Herridge in Wiltshire yesterday, organised by Goodwood Racecourse ahead of the the five days of Glorious Goodwood next week.

Canford Cliffs
The trainer will deploy a team of between 16 and 25 horses at Glorious Goodwood headed by Canford Cliffs and maybe Dick Turpin in the Group One Sussex Stakes over a mile on Wednesday, July 28.

He remarked: “Both Canford Cliffs and Dick Turpin will stay in training as four-year-olds. I think Canford Cliffs will handle Goodwood well - he didn’t like the dip at Newmarket but would not settle that day.

“The Sussex Stakes is going to be one of the highlights of the week and if we happen to get rain then Dick Turpin could run as well.

Hannon traditionally sends a strong team of two-year-olds to Goodwood and he will be well-represented next week.

He added: “We will certainly have runners in the nurseries and the maidens. There are a couple of very nice colts who will probably run in the maidens - one is by Dubawi, a lovely horse his owner Malih Al Basti gave £140,000 for at the Doncaster breeze-ups called Big Issue.

“Pausanias, one of Sir Alex’s (Ferguson), is very nice too and this Kyllachy colt will go to Goodwood too.”

Trainer: Richard Hannon Breeder: Simon & S Hubbard Rodwell

A six-length victory over subsequent Group One Dewhurst Stakes third Xtension in the Group Two Coventry Stakes at Royal Ascot in 2009 saw Canford Cliffs acclaimed as an outstanding prospect. That impressive victory followed a four-length maiden success on his debut at Goodwood the previous month But the colt had to settle for third place on his third and final juvenile start in the Group One Prix Morny at Deauville on August 23. Sent off the odds-on favourite in France, Canford Cliffs was unable to unleash his usual powerful run and finished half a length behind Arcano and a neck behind subsequent champion two-year-old filly Special Duty. He returned to action on April 17 in the Group Three Greenham Stakes at Newbury. The 10/11 favourite led from the off and quickened three lengths clear approaching the distance but hung markedly to the left and was passed close home by stablemate Dick Turpin. Canford Cliffs headed to Newmarket on May 1 for the 2000 Guineas, but again finished a place behind Dick Turpin as the pair came home second and third to the victorious Makfi. Connections retained their faith in the colt and were rewarded at the Curragh three weeks later when Canford Cliffs secured an impressive three-length success in the Irish 2,000 Guineas. He then went to Royal Ascot for the St James’s Palace Stakes on June 15 and a rematch with Dick Turpin. This time it was Canford Cliffs who emerged on top - with the colt quickening very well to lead inside the final 75 yards for a length triumph over his stablemate. Purchased for 46,000 euros as a foal at Goffs in November, 2007, Canford Cliffs was subsequently bought by Peter Doyle for £50,000 at the 2008 Doncaster St Leger Yearling Sale. Susan Roy, wife of BHA chairman Paul Roy, purchased a share in the colt the night before his Coventry Stakes win. The crack miler is set to take on older horses for the first time in the £300,000 Group One Sussex Stakes on Wednesday, July 28, at Glorious Goodwood.

Richard Hannon said: “He has really matured this horse and put on a lot of weight. We took him to Kempton on Monday and he worked around there with one of the Queen’s - Quadrille. He has improved beyond recognition and I am sure he is getting better. He is certainly going the way to be being the best horse I have ever trained. We have now got him to settle - he settles nicely in his races and shows a good turn of foot. Now he drops his head and relaxes in races which he was not doing earlier in the season. I thought he would win the Guineas but he did not settle.”

Race Record: Starts: 7; Wins: 4; 2nd: 1; 3rd: 2; Win & Place Prize Money: £466,274

DICK TURPIN
Richard Hannon said: “I don’t want to really run Canford Cliffs and Dick Turpin against each other in the Sussex Stakes. They are two very good horses and I don’t want to keep knocking their heads together. They are owned by different people so there is not a lot I can do about it.

“Dick Turpin could run in the Sussex Stakes if there is rain - he needs the ground on the easy side of good. John (Manley) will probably run him if those conditions come up. He has improved too.

“He is always on the move - a grand horse. He is very good. I think he could go a mile and a quarter.”

CASUAL GLIMPSE (GB) FACTFILE
2 b c Compton Place - Glimpse (Night Shift (USA))
Form: 151 Owner: Sir Robert Ogden
Trainer: Richard Hannon Breeder: Wickfield Farm Partnership

Casual Glimpse made a winning debut at Goodwood on May 1, when taking the five-furlong EBF Goodwood Hotel Maiden Stakes by two lengths under Pat Dobbs. With that eye-catching victory in the bag, the Compton Place colt was sold to Sir Robert Ogden and sent to Epsom on June 5, to contest the Listed Investec Woodcote Stakes over an extra furlong. Casual Glimpse drifted left down the Epsom camber and came home fifth under Richard Hughes, less than four lengths behind the triumphant High Award. Ryan Moore was in the plate for the colt’s latest start in the European Breeders’ Fund Conditions Stakes at Newmarket’s July Festival on July 8. Casual Glimpse was held up early but emerged to lead inside the distance before drawing clear for a two and a half length success over Lord Of The Stars. A 40,000 guineas purchase from Book 2 of last year’s Tattersalls October Yearling Sale, Casual Glimpse is a half-brother to five winners from six furlongs to a mile and a quarter, out of six-furlong two-year-old winner Glimpse. Casual Glimpse’s next race could be the Group Two Tanqueray Richmond Stakes on Friday, July 30, at Glorious Goodwood, which the trainer has won three times previously, or else the Veuve Clicquot Vintage Stakes.

ELNAWIN (GB) FACTFILE
4 b c Elnadim (USA) - Acicula (IRE) (Night Shift (USA))
Form: 411(1)/(2)55-(2)2536231 Owner: Noodles Racing
Trainer: Richard Hannon Breeder: Richard Tucker

After a debut defeat at Newmarket in July, 2008, Elnawin proceeded to notch a hat-trick of wins as a juvenile, culminating in a Group Three triumph in the six-furlong Sirenia Stakes on Kempton’s Polytrack that September. The Elnadim colt was then absent from the racecourse until returning to finish second behind Nashmiah on his three-year-old bow in the Listed Spring Cup at Lingfield in March, 2009. He raced only twice more that term, his season ending after finishing fifth in six-furlong Listed contests at Ascot and Newbury. Elnawin has made up for lost time this term, returning with a runner-up finish behind Prohibit in a six-furlong Polytrack contest at Kempton on March 27. He filled the same berth behind Blue Jack at Newbury before taking a respectable fifth behind Equiano in the Group Three Palace House Stakes over five furlongs at Newmarket in May. He clinched third and sixth in a pair of Haydock contests later that month and posted a cracking effort when a neck second to Sir Gerry in the Listed Cathedral Stakes over six furlongs at Salisbury on June 13. His latest two outings have come at five furlongs, finishing two lengths third to Glamorous Spirit in the Group Three Sapphire Stakes at the Curragh on June 27, and then slamming the opposition when victorious by five lengths in a Newmarket conditions race on July 16. Elnawin has two potential targets at Glorious Goodwood, the Group Two Audi King George Stakes (Tuesday, July 27) over five furlongs or the six-furlong bluesquare.com Stewards’ Cup (Saturday, July 31).

Race Record: Starts: 15; Wins: 4; 2nd: 4; 3rd: 2; Win & Place Prize Money: £240,694

FREE AGENT
Richard Hannon said: “Free Agent had a back problem and needed a lot of time off but has come back this season and ran well at Windsor before winning a decent race at York.

"He could go to Goodwood for the 14-furlong handicap (the ROA Summer Handicap on Tuesday, July 27) and may want two miles.”

INVINCIBLE SOUL
Richard Hannon said: “Invincible Soul runs in the mile and quarter handicap at Goodwood (Turf TV Summer Vase Heritage Handicap on Thursday, July 29). He was third at Newmarket and previously second in the Britannia - he’s a pretty good horse.”

KING TORUS (IRE) FACTFILE
2 b c Oratorio (IRE) - Dipterous (IRE) (Mujadil (USA))
Form: 141 Owner: Sir Robert Ogden
Trainer: Richard Hannon Breeder: Whisperview Trading Ltd

Bred by Aidan and Anne-Marie O’Brien, King Torus was purchased for 30,000 euros at the Goffs Orby Yearling Sale in September, 2009. He is the second foal out of six-furlong juvenile winner Dipterous. His half-brother, Borghese Gallery, is a multiple sprint winner in Italy. King Torus made an impressive debut when winning his maiden by five lengths at Leicester on May 24 in the colours of Hitchcock & King. That success came over six furlongs but the Oratorio colt was stepped up a furlong for his next outing, having been sold to Sir Robert Ogden, in the Listed Chesham Stakes at Royal Ascot on June 19, in which he came home over five lengths fourth behind the impressive Zaidan. King Torus bounced back from that reversal in fine style when getting the better of Ecliptic by a neck in the Group Two Superlative Stakes over the same distance at Newmarket’s July Festival on July 9. The colt is set to contest the Group Two Veuve Clicquot Vintage Stakes at Glorious Goodwood on Wednesday, July 28.

Richard Hannon junior, assistant to his father, said: “There is not a lot for him at York next month so it might be the right idea to go to Goodwood with him. He is being aimed at a Group One Italian race in October, the Gran Critierium at San Siro, and could go to Goodwood on the way.”

Race Record: Starts: 3; Wins: 2; 2nd: 0; 3rd: 0; Win & Place Prize Money: £46,957

LIBRANNO
Richard Hannon said: “He will go for the Tanqueray Richmond Stakes at Glorious Goodwood after winning the July Stakes. Dick Turpin won the Richmond last year. Libranno is a horse who has come out of the blue. We didn’t know we had him in the yard until we sent him to Newmarket. He jumped out of the gate and they never saw him again and he did the same the other day.”

ORATORY
Richard Hannon said: “He will probably run at Goodwood in the classified race (Sportingbet.com EBF Classified Stakes (Wednesday, July 28). It is 0-95 and he is on 94. The handicap (the totesport Mile) always has a lot of runners and is a tough race, while the classified stakes will have a smaller field - let him run up his rating in that race.”

VITZNAU
Richard Hannon junior, assistant to his father, said: “He is in the totesport Mile and he could win any handicap he wants on his day. A mile seems to stretch him and then he goes back to seven furlongs and seems to want a mile. So he plays a few tricks but we will catch him right one day.”

ZEBEDEE (GB) FACTFILE
2 gr c Invincible Spirit (IRE) - Cozy Maria (USA) (Cozzene (USA))
Form: 1151 Owner: Julie Wood
Trainer: Richard Hannon Breeder: Hascombe & Valiant Studs

Zebedee runs in Julie Wood’s colours, having been bought for 70,000 guineas at the 2009 Tattersalls October Yearling Sale. The Invincible Spirit colt has raced exclusively at five furlongs so far and made a good impression when winning on debut at Windsor on April 12. Zebedee followed up two weeks later at Ascot when drawing two and a half lengths clear for a comfortable success in the Aldermore Conditions Stakes. Zebedee contested the Group Two Norfolk Stakes at Royal Ascot on June 17 and showed plenty of pace in the front rank before finishing fifth, two and a half lengths behind Approve. Zebedee headed to Sandown on July 2, for his latest outing and was a comfortable winner of the Listed Dragon Stakes. The grey justified his starting price as the 8/15 favourite when drawing clear inside the final furlong to win by a length and a quarter from The Thrill Is Gone. Zebedee’s next outing is due to come in the Group Three Betfair Molecomb Stakes at Glorious Goodwood on Tuesday, July 27.

Richard Hannon said: “He is very quick and I don’t think he will be far away in the Molecomb. The course will suit him.”

Race Record: Starts: 4; Wins: 3; 2nd: 0; 3rd: 0; Win & Place Prize Money: £27,571

RICHARD HANNON

Richard Hannon, who was born in Lewes, East Sussex, on May 30, 1945, has been training since 1970 when he took over the licence on the retirement of his father Henry (Harry).

Originally, Hannon trained just from stables at East Everleigh in Wiltshire but, due to the increase in the size of his string (around 200 in 2010), he also has a base at nearby Herridge, a stud farm when bought 19 years ago, where he lives.

His first winner came over hurdles at Chepstow on March 30, 1970, when Sir Nuilli was successful, while Ampney Prince provided his initial winner on the Flat in a Newbury maiden on April 17 the same year.

Hannon made rapid progress as a trainer. A first Pattern race victory came courtesy of Crespinall in the 1972 Princess Elizabeth Stakes at Epsom and the same filly went on to win the Nassau Stakes at Glorious Goodwood later that season - his first Goodwood triumph.

Classic success followed shortly afterwards, when Mon Fils caused a 50/1 shock in the 1973 2000 Guineas at Newmarket. Don’t Forgot Me (1987) and Tirol (1990) won the same Newmarket Classic for the yard, and both colts also triumphed in the Irish 2,000 Guineas.

Hannon has made a particular reputation for his expertise with sprinters and two-year-olds, though his successes are by no means confined to those spheres.
Lyric Fantasy was champion two-year-old filly in 1992 when her wins included the Group One Nunthorpe Stakes against older opposition at York, while Lemon Souffle achieved the same honour in 1993.

His major Group One wins also include the Moyglare Stud Stakes with Lyric Fantasy, the 2003 Sussex Stakes with Reel Buddy, the Prix Royal-Oak (French St Leger) with Assessor as well as the Prix de l'Abbaye and the July Cup with Mr Brooks. He has trained 29 winners at Royal Ascot and was the leading trainer at the meeting this season with three victories. He was also top trainer, with five victories including all the two-year-old Group races, at the recent three-day Newmarket July meeting.

He has sent out at least 100 winners in 19 of the last 20 years (including 2010), achieved with mostly cheaply bought horses purchased from the yearling and breeze-up sales in conjunction with bloodstock agent Peter Doyle, although his owner-breeder clients now include The Queen.

His current star racehorses, who could be his best ever, include Paco Boy, who has won three Group One races including the Lockinge Stakes at Newbury this year and got within a neck of the world’s best miler Goldikova in the Queen Anne Stakes at Royal Ascot last time out, as well as the pair of very high-class three-year-olds Canford Cliffs (winner of this season’s Irish 2,000 Guineas and St James’s Palace Stakes) and Dick Turpin (successful in the Group One Prix Jean Prat at Chantilly). There is also tremendous juvenile talent in the stable, with the likes of Coventry Stakes winner Strong Suit, Memory, Libranno and King Torus.
At Goodwood, Hannon’s record is outstanding. Since Crespinall set the ball rolling in 1972, he has gone on to record a total of 195 Goodwood victories, making him the most successful current trainer at the course. Of those victories, 47 came at Glorious Goodwood and he could reach the 50-mark this year. He has been leading trainer at Glorious Goodwood twice, in 2008 with four successes over the five days and in 1993 with five wins.

He collected the Rolls Royce/Dick Hern Memorial Award for training the most winners at Goodwood in both 2009 and 2008, with 17 and 15 successes respectively. He was also top trainer at the Sussex course in 2007 (joint - seven wins along with Marcus Tregoning), 2004 (10 wins), 1996 (joint - eight wins along with Paul Cole), 1995 (seven wins) and 1993 (11 wins).
So far during 2010, he has amassed nine Goodwood triumphs, more than double the total of any other trainer, and is hopeful of adding a winner or two next week.

Richard Hannon was champion trainer in 1992 and he leads the standings for 2010 both on total prize money won and number of winners trained. He has sent out 123 British winners in 2010 (up to Sunday, July 18) and amassed over £1.8 million in prize money.

He is married to Jo and has six children - the triplets Richard Jnr (his assistant trainer), Henry and Lizzie (who is married to stable jockey Richard Hughes) - Fanny (who is married to trainer Sylvester Kirk), Claire and Julie.
