Ribchester v Churchill: Duel On The Downs Is On

A potentially thrilling generation clash once more awaits after Aidan O’Brien confirmed he intends to run Churchill in the £1million Group 1 mile.

The dual 2000 Guineas winner disappointed last month when he could finish only fourth behind Barney Roy in the St James’s Palace Stakes at Royal Ascot.

Ballydoyle handler O’Brien was not willing to put forward any excuses for that effort and is happy that Churchill is in good order and ready for the Sussex Stakes.

Since Frankel beat Canford Cliffs in 2011, the Sussex has routinely produced a generation clash between the Classic class and the older brigade and that looks like being the case again as Queen Anne winner Ribchester is also firmly on course for Goodwood.

Churchill is the 15/8 second favourite with Betfred for the August 2 contest and O’Brien is upbeat on his well-being.

“Churchill’s good,” said O’Brien. “He’s come out of Ascot well and the plan is to go for the Sussex. I’m very happy with him and he’s been very well since Ascot.

“Nothing’s come to light, it was a very hot day in Ireland and in England and maybe it was a combination of the travel and the warm weather, but I don’t want to make excuses. He seems in very good form.”

Ribchester, who finished a close third behind The Gurkha and Galileo Gold in the Sussex 12 months ago, is the 4/5 favourite with Betfred to take the prize this time around, with trainer Richard Fahey looking forward to running his three-time Group 1 scorer although he remains wary of Churchill.

“Maybe he was a bit disappointing last time, I’m sure Aidan was disappointed, but he’s a big threat and he gets the three-year-old allowance,” said Fahey.

“As a small trainer in the north these are the sort of races you want to be involved in. He’s doing everything we want; every time I see him he just looks better and better.”
