Profitable wears down hot favourite Mecca's Angel in the Temple Stakes

Profitable

Clive Cox's Profitable survived a stewards' inquiry as he landed the Temple Stakes by a neck from Mecca's Angel.

Cox, who dramatically lost a race at Goodwood on Friday when his Seeking Magic was demoted to third after being first-past-the-post, was made to sweat a little again after Profitable drifted to his left in the closing stages.

However, the stewards ruled the placings remain unaltered to give Profitable his second win from two starts as a four-year-old following his victory in the Palace House Stakes at Newmarket last month.

After 15 millimetres of rain at the track since Friday afternoon the ground had changed to Good to Soft, Soft in places and that meant Mecca's Angel was allowed to run her first race since landing the Nunthorpe at York last August.

She was sent off the even-money favourite to follow up the victory on ideal ground conditions, but the much-improved Profitable was just too strong in the closing stages and prevailed by a neck.

Waady ran on from the rear for third.

Winning rider Adam Kirby said: "I was very bullish when he won the last time, and I was even more chuffed today.

"I got there soon enough, he put his head down and Clive has got him in tip-top shape.

"He's improving all the time - he was a boy last year and is a man now. He's got speed to burn, he's a proper sprinter.

"When he got there he only does enough, but she (Mecca's Angel) would never have beaten me."

Cox said: "We were very concerned when it rained like it did, and it always walks better here than it rides and he is better on better ground. I'm so thrilled he's done it like that.

"All credit to her (Mecca's Angel), but I think on better ground he will power away.

"The King's Stand (Royal Ascot) is the plan. I'm so thrilled, he's a star."

Michael Dods, trainer of Mecca's Angel, said: "She got carried across the track, but at the end of the day it was a neck, if it had been a head they might have had a proper look at it.

"Paul (Mulrennan) said he had to half-stop riding, but she's run a blinder and will come on for the run."
