Pipedreamer Lands Public Plunge
06/10/07

Fears this morning that connections might pull Pipedreamer out of the totesport.com Cambridgeshire on account of the fastish ground came to nothing and the progressive three-year-old duly justified 5-1 favouritism to hit the bookies in one of the biggest betting races of the campaign.

Winning trainer John Gosden, who landed the race with Halling in 1994, said: “That was a good effort and he did it well. He had a nice draw which helped and a nice clean run up the middle.

“For two months we’ve been waiting to run him and there were no excuses not to and when I walked the course this morning, it was fine with no jar in it.

“If it had been sunny and breezy for the last two days, I might have thought otherwise, but the stick went in and we ran.

“I was worried on the first day when it was sunny, but I wanted to run for the public although the horse must come first and fortunately both came together. I very much wanted to run as the horse had been so hyped up and the public loaded on and when people are betting a £100 or £200 it is in your mind. I wouldn’t have pulled out lightly, but I am happy.

“Halling was a very progressive horse and won Eclipses - it is a long way from winning the Cambridgeshire to an Eclipse.

“Steve Cauthen liked Halling and the plan was the Cambridgeshire. This horse has raced through the year and is progressive and could be an Earl Of Sefton Stakes horse next year and could run in the Listed Jane Seymour Stakes here over ten furlongs on Saturday, November 3.

“The hype surrounding him was not totally wrong but in a race like the Cambridgeshire, I thought that it was a bit daft with people thinking that he has just got to turn up. I thought that he was getting too many headlines for a handicap win, but my comments were slightly to defend our horse.

“I said to Jimmy [Fortune, jockey] that if he was travelling well, to go on. Unlike Nannina in the previous race, he doesn’t play about when he hits the front. Nannina just plays and when she goes by, she thinks: ‘Right, I’ll go for a cup of tea now.”

DOCOFTHEBAY JUST MISSES OUT AGAIN
Paul Dixon, president of the Racehorse Owners’ Association and owner of Cambridgeshire runner-up Docofthebay, was ruing the one that got away after his three-year-old gelding was unable to reel in winner Pipedreamer, going down by a length despite a determined late run.

Dixon, who also heads the Horsemen’s Group, said: “That’s twice in two weeks we should have won the big one but it’s still a nice bit of prize money.”

Docofthebay’s trainer Jamie Osborne concurred:: “It’s never good to finish second but he’s run another good race. He’s never been out of the first three in his life.

“The way he’s improved this year, his days in handicaps are numbered and he’ll have to take another step up in class next year.”

Loraine Ellison, representing her father Brian Ellison, trainer of third-placed Teslin, felt the draw scuppered the gelding’s winning chance.

She said: “He was really unlucky, another furlong and he’d have won it. I was really impressed when he hit the front - he put his head down and went on.

“J-P (Guillambert) gave him a cracking ride and he’ll keep the ride on him now when he goes to Dubai.

“He’s the unluckiest horse in the race as he had a really bad draw.”

Yarqus, fourth at 33/1, left his connections satisfied, with Bruce Raymond, racing manager to owner Saeed Manana, commenting: “We’re very happy with him. He’s always consistent and this race really suited him.

The four-year-old’s trainer Clive Brittain added: “There were a lot of very good horses in the race so we’re really pleased.”
