Vaughan Bags Champion Novice Hurdle
06/05/11

2 Prima Vista 8/1
3 First Lieutenant 13/8

Trainer Tim Vaughan, who had his first Grade 1 success at Aintree last month, enjoyed another top-level victory when breaking his Punchestown Festival duck with Spirit Of Adjisa in the Grade 1 Cathal Ryan Memorial Champion Novice Hurdle.

The 16/1 shot held off Prima Vista by a short-head to land the spoils under Richard Johnson.

“If you look back on his form before he joined me, he had been second to Oscar Whisky and Finian’s Rainbow and obviously that form has worked out so well now,” said Vaughan. “He won two on the bridle before joining me and we kept him fresh. He won very, very nicely at Bangor and we thought he was better than that. We put him away for the summer and when he bolted up at Market Rasen, Richard said this is a proper horse.

“He got a little niggle at home and we decided to leave Cheltenham and Aintree and come here. We thought he is going to be a fresh horse and some of the others are going to be a bit tired. Thank God it’s worked.

“He makes the running every time he runs. Usually he wins by more than a short-head but was obviously up massively in class today.

“The owners want to give him a Flat campaign over the summer so we’ll keep him going and then go back hurdling next season and he wants a step up to three miles. Richard is instrumental in my team and especially to this horse’s campaign. He’s won three out of three on him and we run where he’s available.”

Kid Cassidy
There was another British-trained success when Nicky Henderson saddled Kid Cassidy to a comfortable success in the Star Best For Racing Coverage Novice Hurdle.

The five-year-old, who was ridden by Tony McCoy for owner J P McManus, was affected at Newbury in February when two horses were believed to have been electrocuted in the paddock before their race.

“When he won his first race at Newbury, A P (McCoy) thought he was very good. He was then involved in that shocking day back at Newbury when he got zapped. He collapsed behind completely but we didn’t know what had happened initially. As the drama unfolded, we realised what had gone on so withdrew him from the race,” said Henderson.

“We had to take a lot of careful steps on the way after that. He has always been buzzy but he was a nice horse that we wanted to take care of. It was nice that there was another horse to take him on out there. He started the season on a high and finished on a high and I hope he has a big future.”
