ALEXANDER ALLIANCE HEADS STRAIGHT TO THE STAN JAMES 1000 GUINEAS
24/03/06

Tommy Stack saddled Las Meninas to land the Group One Stan James 1000 Guineas on her seasonal reappearance in 1994, and the trainer is looking to repeat the feat with Alexander Alliance in the first fillies' Classic on Sunday, May 7, which carries record prize money of £330,000.

The Cashel trainer's son and assistant, Fozzy Stack, revealed: "She'll go straight there because she wants good ground, and the chance of getting that in a prep run in early April is pretty slim."

Like Las Meninas, Alexander Alliance raced only twice as a juvenile, placing second to Aidan O'Brien's unbeaten Art Museum in a six-furlong Curragh maiden in September, before returning to the course and distance for an eye-catching three and a half length Listed success over Kamarinskaya the following month.

Stack reported: "She was impressive when she won her Listed race at the Curragh at the back-end, and her preparation is going good so far. She's in good shape and has wintered well."

The Danetime filly, a half-sister to Listed sprint winner Ruby Rocket and currently a 20/1 chance with Stan James, possesses plenty of speed, but Stack is keeping his fingers crossed that she will stay the full distance of the Natwest Rowley Mile.

He continued: "On pedigree she shouldn't get the trip, but we're hopeful she will. She's bred to get about five furlongs, but she got six well and should get seven. Whether she stays a mile or not is another thing.

"She's a fine, big filly with plenty of scope, and we'd expect her to progress as the year goes on."

The Stan James Guineas Festival takes place on the NatWest Rowley Mile course at Newmarket on Saturday, May 6, and Sunday, May 7. Both the Stan James 1000 Guineas and the Stan James 2000 Guineas are worth a record £330,000 in 2006.
