Profitable keeps Cotai Glory at bay to win the King's Stand

Profitable

Profitable confirmed he was the most improved sprinter in training when landing the G1 King's Stand Stakes over five furlongs.

Sent off a 4/1 shot, four-year-old Profitable beat Cotai Glory by a neck with Goken a length further back in third. The winner was given a 3/1 quote for York's Nunthorpe Stakes by Boylesports.

Winning trainer Clive Cox said: "First time out I thought he might need the run because he's so laid back at home. He won the Palace House Stakes at Newmarket and I was concerned about soft ground for the Temple Stakes and he won that. That gave me confidence coming here today, and he travelled so strongly. Watching everything else fall away while he dug in has made me feel really pleased.

"I bought him as a yearling and he's been progressive all the way. He was so quick to start with that he was hitting the front too soon in races as a youngster and he didn't know what life was all about. He was a victim of his own ability, but when he got the hang of it and we got the hang of him it's been an upward curve.

"We gave him some fancy entries last year because we believed in him, but it didn't quite work out, but physically he's a man now.

"He's very special and I'm delighted for [owner] Alan Spence, for [jockey] Adam Kirby and for the horse's new connections [breeding rights to Profitable were last week sold to Sheikh Mohammed's Darley Stud]. Adam had a late night last night as his wife was expecting a baby [now born] and to win a Group One so soon after makes it a great day.

"Any horse that wins a Group One is special and I hope we can enjoy a little more success before he goes off to stud. We didn't enter him for the July Cup because I felt he was best over five furlongs, but the way he has toughed it out today on easy ground, we may need a rethink. We'll talk with Alan and see what's what."

HILLS ASTONISHED BY COTAI GLORY'S RUN

Charlie Hills was almost speechless after Cotai Glory put in his best performance of the season to finish second, a neck behind the winner at odds of 33/1.

The delighted trainer said: "When the rain came I thought we had no chance. But soft ground at Ascot is a little bit different to anywhere else and they seem to be getting through it today.

"I was pleased with the way he was before the race. He looked well up for it. He's had a couple of runs now, which have helped."

Speaking about future plans the Lambourn trainer added: "I wouldn't mind trying him over six furlongs. I'm looking forward to running him on fast ground because he is very fast. We'll have York as the firm plan, whether we take another race in between I don't know."

Kevin Ryan, trainer of Goken, who finished third at odds of 50/1, said: "I'm delighted with him. He's had a bit of a blip and we've tweaked a few things at home. Tracy who led him up today rides him every day and she said: 'Why don't we ride him like we do at work - out the back door?' She was spot on, she knows him better than I do. So he sat out the back, let him get on with it and let him pick up the pieces in the last two.

"Taking nothing away from the winner and the second, he got a little bit unlucky, he got stopped and after that it's hard to get rolling again. But I'm delighted with him."

MECCA'S FLAT

Michael Dodds, trainer of the 6/4 favourite, Mecca's Angel, who finished 16th of 17, said: "Paul (Mulrennan, jockey) just said she was paddling on the ground. I don't think she wants it as soft as this. We will check her out when we get home."

Mulrennan added: "She just didn't feel herself today - she never travelled but she will come again."

MONGOLIAN SATURDAY

Jockey Florent Geroux, who rode Mongolian Saturday to finish ninth after running prominently, said after the race: "He broke sharp enough from the gate and was travelling well. I don't know really what happened then, whether it was the ground or going straight (rather than round a bend) for the first time he felt comfortable until we came to two hundred mark, after that he was rather flat."

Mongolian Saturday holds an entry in Saturday's Diamond Jubilee Stakes as well as the July Cup at Newmarket in July.
