Pineau De Re won the 2014 Crabbie’s Grand National as the first-ever runner in the great race for both owner John Provan and trainer Dr Richard Newland.

Looking out of sorts last season, Pineau De Re could only finish 12th in defence of his Grand National crown. He has posted some better efforts this time around, headed by a victory over hurdles in a Pertemps Qualifier at Carlisle in December, and was also previously runner-up in a veterans’ handicap chase at Sandown Park in November.

This horse is named after a fortified wine (Pineau) produced in the Poitou-Charente region of western France, specifically in this case on the Ile de Re, an island linked by a bridge to the mainland.

Bred by the Ile de Re based Michel Hardy, Pineau De Re was sold as a three-year-old at a sale at St-Cloud for €20k and moved to Ireland. He came to Newland in the summer of 2013, aged 10, after being bought privately before a projected appearance at the Doncaster Bloodstock Sales.

Pineau De Re had been trained in Ireland for owner Barry Connell and won the Ulster National by 23 lengths at Downpatrick in April 2013.

Jumps race record

While a win rate of less than 18 per cent over fences doesn’t look that encouraging, punters must consider that Pineau De Re is a late-blooming horse. He’s been placed more often than he’s won.
